Is it OK for my 10-week baby to suck her thumb?

my baby baby girl is 10 weeks old and is trying desperatly to suck her thumb. (still trying to get cordinated enough to do this easily) When she gets her thumb in there.. or any other finger for that matter.. she is happy. I find this nice.. she is self-soothing.
A few members of my family think i should not let her suck her thumb.. they said i would be better to switch her to her paci when she tries to suck the fingers... cuz later on down the road.. the paci will be an easier habit to break than thumb sucking.
What's your opinion?

  • I agree with the above answer that some kids are just meant to be thumb suckers. My son does and hasn't taken a pacifier since he found his thumb. There are good and bad points about both thumb-sucking and pacifiers and its really a personal decision as to whether you want to keep the thumb away or not. If you do keep letting her suck her thumb, just smile and nod when the criticizing comes. Personally, my friends think my son is the most adorable thing ever when he puts him thimb in his mouth, then his head on my shoulder and looks up at them with his big blue eyes!

  • my 3 1/2 yo sucks her thumb and has since around 10 weeks.. she wanted nothing to do with a paci.. i agree atleast she is a self soother and gracie only does it now when she is tired or scared it is her comfort object some kids have paci's or blankies or a teddy.. i say let her do it.. my gracie used to do it all the time but as she has gotten older she does it less and now my almost 10 week old is trying to find hers and when she does she goes right to sleep so i think some kids are just meant to be thumbsuckers( faith will not take a paci either)

  • I agree to an extent about the pacifier thing. Thats what I do but after thinking about it having them self south is good too. Then when they wake up at night you wont have to go in and give them a paci and stuff they will find there finger and its always there. But on the other hand its hard to break a thumb sucker.

  • i wouldn't let her suck her thumb becouse i know a 21 and a 24 year old that still suck their thumbs and it is a very hard habit to quit, quiting smoking is easier to quit than that also it can mess up teeth development and cost thousands of dollors to fix a paci would be better and easier to ween them from but thats just my opinion and i know from 1st hand experience
