How can I encourage my baby to crawl?

My son is 7 months and 3 weeks and does not want ANYTHING to do with laying on his belly. I am worried he may not want to crawl. I've always tried giving him belly time but he never liked it. He now prefers to sit up. Occasionally he'll go on his belly on his own but he'll start crying after about 5 minutes. Any suggestions?

  • Try having him lay on his belly on top of you. Put him on your chest, or your legs and talk or sing to him. Try him on his tummy on a boppy pillow. Fly him through the air face down. As he gets more comfortable with being belly down, encourage him to do it on the floor bit by bit, gradually extending the length of time. It's ok if he fusses about it, it really is important for him. Is he turning over on his own? If not, you may want to check with your pediatrician.

  • Tummy time is the only answer... My nephew never crawled He went from sitting up to cruising and then walking.. Some babies don't crawl...But most don't start until 8 months, Just be patient.. Don't make him grow up any faster than he already is....:o)

  • They have a LOT of fun toys to help babies get ready for tummy time. Try some different ones and find one that he'll love and it'll distract him from the fact "I'm on my tummy!". When he get's used to it you can put it just out of his reach and he'll be tempted to try to crawl towards it.

  • My son didn't crawl until he was 10 months old. He didn't want anything to do with being on his belly either. He got over that when he started rolling over. Don't worry. Your baby is fine :)

  • My daughter didnt learn to sit up untill 8 months... a month after that she started crawling (this was about 3 weeks ago).. now she walkes around couches.. and can stand with out support.
Babies learn at their own speed.
How i got my daughter to crawl was got some of those glow in the dark sticks.. the onese you break... and they glow...
and put them a couple feet in front of her.. and that night she started crawling.
All you can do is wait... hes not late.. he might not even crawl.. but he has you to help him. TRUST me i know its hard.. but he will crawl when he is ready to. I asked the same question a couple months ago.. and got answers like "just give it time".. which i know is exactly what im saying to you.. but thats what ya gotta do.. if their not ready.. they wont crawl.

  • my daughter didnt start crawling til just now she is 10m.
she would always scream like it was hurting her to be on her belly and legs.
he will do it when he is ready if you push it he might not want to do it even more.

  • I do small spurts of tummy time with my little guy, as he's not a fan either. I usually but him flat on the ground, then when he gets a little fussy, I'll prop his upper body up on the Boppy. We're slowly working our way up to being more comfortable with it...slowly! Is there anything that's especially enticing to him? Put it within crawling range and see how hard he tries to get to it.

All of that being said, I would say don't rush it, he'll get around when he's good and ready. That, and when he feels he has a reason to move.
