Is it normal to have swelling in ankles and fingers after giving birth?

I gave birth 7 weeks ago and my fingers are still swollen ( look like little sausages!) my doc even put me on water pills and they didn't do a bit of good. I can't even get my wedding ring back on and have to loosen the strings in all my tennis shoes.

  • A good doctor once told me that getting up and moving around and drinking plenty of water to flush my system was the best defence. You would think putting you feet up would do better. Try putting your feet up if you must remain sitting. Try to get plenty of water in you and perhaps call a friend that has children of her own and go for a walk with her at the park. I happen to know the weather has been beautiful where you live...she will be waiting for your call. LOL

  • Usually it starts to go down within a week or so. I was extremely swollen (thats actually part of the reason they induced me) and I was back to normal by 2 weeks. No offense, but are you sure you didn't just gain weight in your fingers? What did your Dr tell you?

  • mine took 2 weeks and I was very swollen. However, I did gain weight everywhere.. and it took until just a couple weeks ago (3mos) for me to lose enough weight to get my rings on comfortably again. I would start light exercise to encourage your body to metabolize faster.

  • Man, that sucks. Mine went away right away. Maybe a couple of days and I was pretty darn swollen before giving birth.

  • Oh I so know how you feel. My son is now 2 months old. I was sooooo swollen, and it lasted so long that we were afraid that I wouldnt be able to get shoes on when the weather changed. I was swolled for about 5 weeks or so, and then suddenly, in like 3 days it was gone. Try having someone massage your hands for you. My husband would massage my feet when he got home from work, and I think it helped. I was so swollen the massage hurt, but I really do think it helped.

  • Did you have to have a lot of iv's after the birth or anything, cuz that could do it.  I had to have a blood transfusion and iv's after my son and so it took me a long to time like at least 6 weeks to get the swelling down.  I also gained liked 70 lbs because I only weighed 85 when i got pregnant so my nfingers never went down completely so I had to get my rings sized up, not to mention that I was in  a size 3 ring when I got married.
