Is it OK for my 9-year-old to drink coffee?

About six months ago my youngest daughter started sipping on coffee and now drinks 2 cups in the moring and usually 1 cup after school. I don't have a problem with it although my sister thinks it's terrible and not healthy for her. I think it's better than drinking soda. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I don't see it as a major issue but would like other's opinions. Thanks, Sherry

  • I wouldn't let her dink that much. Once in awhile is OK I think. My grandmother used to let me drink the occasional cup.

  • children form other ethnic backgrounds in other countries drink it, and alot of the latinos in our area allow their children coffee before school, it's a just a 'thing' some families do. i do not see a problem with it. other than maybe it staining her teeth, that's the only thing.

  • I know my daughter who is now 15 drinks coffee here and there, and when she was much younger, her Cuban grandparents would let her have coffee all the time. (DH at the time ok'd it) My concern would be the addiction of caffeine and the teeth staining.

  • I don't see it as a problem if she likes it. My youngest daughter started drinking coffee around 7 and she's 16 now and drinks as much as me but it's never been a problem.

  • My oldest drink coffee as well. I also believe it is better then soda. You could try giving her decaf, which is what my oldest drinks. My other children try it, but for the most part they do not drink it.

    Good Luck and don't worry

  • As someone stated above, in some cultures kids drinking coffee isn't a big deal at all. My boyfriend (hispanic as ya'll probably know) has told me time and time again that his mom let him and all of his siblings have coffee when they were kids. Now he's 23 and has a slight caffeine addiction, but other than that he's strong as an ox and very healthy.

My mom told me that my grandparents used to put coffee in my sippy cup when I was a kid. Now, I don't agree with that at all, but I'm just saying that it's not as uncommon as you think.

So I think your daughter will be just fine :D

  • Sounds like a lot, but my BFF has raised her kids on coffee. Her now 17, 14, 6 and 3 yr old still drink it and she gives the younger two a baby bottle every morning with coffee in it....Its hilarious!....She does a lot of weird things, but thats why I like her. We don't stay in the box. They only do that in the mornings though. THree times a day sounds a bit much. Whatever you want though.

  • i don't think it's good for ur child...caffeine IS a drug..i no we're all guilty of drinking it and some may be even addicted ( i no i crave a coke evryday at 3) but u have the power, and the responsibility, right now 2 prevent ur child from making unhealthy choices! although i do drink soda....i never bring n2 the house, the kids r allowd 2 have it as a treat when we go out 2 eat...but at home it's juice and water...same with sugary items. u wouldn't let ur child eat 3 donuts a day would u? y not? cause it's unhaeathy. and so is caffeine.
