How can I help relieve constipation in a newborn?

He's been very fussy and crying... I rubbed his belly but is it wise to feed him a little bit of prunes?

  • Some Dr's will tell you different, and mine told me that it can be normal for a baby not to poop for a week. One Dr told me it was normal for an EBF baby to not go for up to 3 weeks... crazy if you ask me, but anyhow. If my daughter seems to be having a hard time going, I try helping her by pushing her legs up into her belly kind of in a pumping or bicycling motion. If your not comfortable giving your little guy juice yet, just try a few ounces of plain water. Otherwise, some watered down prune juice or apple juice if nothing else works.

  • My baby didn't poop for over a week after she was born. The Dr. at the time told me to not worry, it will come. It did.

But 4 years later, she has major poop issues. Doesn't poop for days. When she does, it's a big ordeal... like a snake.

We've moved since and our new dr. told me that if it had been his patient, he would have ordered a GI specialist to take a look at her. So now we're seeing a GI specialist 4 years later.

  • Before you do anything, why do you think your baby is constipated?

  • If breastfed, they are very likely to go less frequently. One of mine went 8 days. Dr. kept saying to stop worrying. She finally went while we were at church (of course) and it was such a mess we had to go home. Sometimes you can gently take their temp. rectally to help it along.
