  • with my first I had an OB and I hated her! she was what I got stuck with at the health department

with #2 & #3 I had a midwife and she was awesome. I chose her because she wasn't an OB, really no other reasoning...

  • I loved my OB, but I'm one of those people that doesn't mind the hospital, I actually enjoyed my time there a lot. I figure why get a family practitioner when you can have someone who specializes in delivering babies?

  • OBGYN Didn't chose a mid-wife because I believe in pain medication Didn't chose my family practitioner because I don't think they are qualified to deliver a baby

  • um robin - I had a midwife and got an epidural... midwife does not mean no pain medication. also gave birth at a hospital.

do people think that midwives are like backwoods doctors or something?

  • Hmm interesting that you ladies saying you chose an OB was because you wanted someone who specialized in delivering babies... first of all... YOU are delivering the baby, not your practitioner, not your midwife.. secondly, midwives are very supportive of the use of pain medication, and they specialize it caring for healthy, normal pregnancies and births. If you look at the World Health Organization's stance on pregnancy and childbirth, you will find that they very much favor midwives over OBs for normal pregnancies. Births attended by midwives result in less cesareans, less episiotomies, less use of pitocin, and shorter, easier births. No wonder the U.S. has the highest maternal mortality rate, and the second highest infant mortality rate in the industrialized world while we are using midwives in 8% of births, and all the rest are using 78%. I chose a midwife : )

  • I think there are benefits any route you go and it should depend on your personal situation. I had an OB because I was a high risk pregnancy. Even If I were'n't I probably would have chosen an OB simply because that is their specialty. I know many people who have had wonderful experiences with a midwife and their family practitioner. It's up to YOU. Just keep an open mind if you have special circumstances during your pregnancy that might require specialized care.
