Do you have any tips for saving money on heating your home?

We got a 169 dollar heat bill for one month! They told us it will continue to go up through the colder months. We keep the heat at 69 and it's barely warm upstairs. Would space heaters help, and would it raise the electric too high?
I threw blankets over the windows, anything else I can do?

  • Make sure your windows and doors are properly sealed. If you have a chimney, make sure the flute is closed.

Your home may not be insulated enough. Look into that.

  • space heater add onto your heating bill, they dont help at all, my thermastate is set at 61 or 62, yeah its cold in my house, but i know not to run that space heater, my hubby figured it out once the cost of a space heater verses turning on your furnace, furnaces come out a little cheaper or it might of come close, so it really didnt matter what one you used.
if you dont have to use your dryer, dont...you can hang your clothes if your desperate.
dont use much hot water even doing your whites, it takes money to heat up any hot water you use.
and we go through a program that is offered so that somehow some of your heating bill is covered if your qualified, you can check into that through your company.

  • If your windows are older, get the plastic that seals to them. Also I think that HEAP is national, there was an article in our paper recently and the income guideline was higher than I thought it was, so you might qualify for that.

  • Cover your windows with plastic, trun you heat down as low as possible and bundel up your family. The space heaters dont work and raise your electric bill so dont bother with that. Make sure doors and windows are sealed well. Close the vents in rooms that you are not needing to heat, (bathrooms, Laundry room etc,) if possible close the doors too put heavy blankets or curtins over all the windows, if you have a backdoor that is not being used cover it with plastic and blankets too Make sure the vents in bedrooms, livingroom, and anyother room you are heating is fully open and not being uncovered. Also ask about heating assistance. In colorado its called LEAP. We have not really needed the heat I guess we are lucky. Today is the only day we have ran it all day.

  • Space heaters cause a LOT of the fires you see in winter months. Please be cautious with that choice. Have you considered an electric blanket? We have one, I looove snuggling under it at night. It's hard to get up into a chilly house in the morning, I admit, but you do what you have to do. Also some saving tips -- if you're not home during the day, turn the heat down a few degrees when you leave - no sense heating the entire house all day if it's empty.

  • HI there. My parents have 2200 sq foot home and we have always used oil heaters. They heat perfect and the bill has never been that high! If I were you I would look into getting a couple oil heaters. Obama said he was going to raise up the natural gas prices so high so that no one can afford to use it. That is his way of getting us out of having to us it....He said it not me! So a lot of children will be cold this winter! Its only going to get worse! I would buy a few oil heaters. We are in MD and everything is more here so we are going to get some oil heaters very soon!! Hope that helps!

  • LEAP is nationwide and all you have to do is fill out a very short form and give them a copy of your highest most recent bill and you should get money within weeks. It is a program thru Social Services. I just did mine last week and qualified for $900.00 will get half Nov 25 and the other half in February,, so get it done quik, there is a time limit.
