What is tummy time?

I've been wondering, cause my friend says that it helps him support his head, and gets him started on how to support himself with his arms and such. I was wondering if any of you had any tips for it? He likes sleeping on his tummy, but when I put him on his tummy and try to atleast pass one of his toys infront of him, he just wimpers at me.

  • well, i dont know what tummy time is.... but to help support my daughters head and immediately help her from day5 sit supported and eventually sit unsupported we used the "BUMBO" thats what it is called...it looks like a little snug chair... it workd awesome, she sat supported by 2months old (she could hold her head up and so on) at 5 months she was sittin unsupported!

  • My son never enjoyed "tummy time", and he would cry if I put him on his stomach. But he still was right on point with holding his head up and began crawling at 6 months, so I don't think it is TOO big of a deal if they don't take to it. They know what is comfortable and what isn't.

  • Tummy time is when you lay your child on the floor on a blanket or play mat so that he/she can practice lifting their head off the ground and strengthen their neck muscles.

  • Baby's should sleep on their backs. It cuts the risk of SIDS in half. However, I know that some kids WON'T sleep on their backs. Mine wouldn't. If yours will sleep on his back, put him down on his back for sleep.

When he is not asleep, at least a couple hours a day should be spent on his tummy. Not in a car seat, not in a bouncy chair, not laying on his back playing with toys that dangle over head. On his tummy. That is tummy time.

  • Be aware, babies usually HATE tummy time. They can't see anything. But that's the point. It gets them to lift their heads and look around - which builds neck, back, tummy, and arm muscles. All of which he will need in order to sit up on his own, crawl, and walk. To make it more fun, get down on your tummy too. Play with a toy between the two of you. When he gets upset, end it for now. Try again later in the day. Remember, when he's older, he won't want to eat veggies but you know they are good for him. Well, tummy time is good for him too. He won't like it but he needs it.

  • tummy time is practice. but i think if kids hate it so much, it shouldn't be pushed. trust me, with or without it, he will lift his head when it's time. lol. so don't stress it. milestones are always reached. no need to rush them.
