Why is my baby's hair falling out?

I heard that a babies hair falls out as the head grows. Is that true? When will it happen and when will the hair grow back?

  • Within the first few months, many babies lose that fine, fuzzy baby hair. It's not because their head grows, it's just a part of development. Every child is different, so whether or not that happens, when it happens, and when the "real" hair grows in will vary from child to child.

  • It's a hormonal thing, just like what happens to your hair when you're pregnant (and then postpartum, ugh). You might not even notice it happening, as their new hair is growing in at the same time. The only way I can tell is by what's left behind in the bassinet! So cute!

  • I was just reading up on this today because my daughters hair is almost gone. It is hormonal just like your hair gets thick during pregnancy and falls out when the hormones are gone.
I am really sad too because my two boys were totally bald when they were born and I was so happy to have a baby girl that had hair. :(

  • ...My son is 2 months old, and hasn't lost his hair yet, but I kinda hope he doesn't. Then again, even though I lost my hair when I was a baby (per mom said), my little brother had a full head of hair until he was old enough for my dad to shave it off. I use to have people come up and say "oh you got a beautiful little sister!" That and if he gets his daddy's big ears, the hair will help disguise it (my husband's fear)
