Can I have an occasional drink if I'm pregnant?

Okay, I'm well aware that binge drinking is a no-no when pregnant. That's definitely filed in the "no-duh" section of my brain! But what about one or two drinks around the holidays? I'm talking about wine, champagne, etc. - not taking shots of liqour!

I've heard and read conflicting opinions on this matter, and I was curious what others have heard or what others have done. I will personally admit that I have had three glasses of wine TOTAL since I've been pregnant.

  • My dr said that it is okay to have a couple of oz but not anymore because it can cause damage. I had a few sips of a margarita, and about 2 oz of wine during my pregnancy. I don't think that there is any problem if done in severe moderation. I know that I will be blasted my some people who will think that I am a bad mom for having a few drinks but I did what worked for me and my child is completely healthy and normal.

  • Maybe it's the Holidays coming up but there seems to be a lot of alcohol questions on here lately! Personally I haven't had any alcohol during any of my three pregnancies. Well, actually my first son was conceived with a bottle of the Captain lol. I've heard people say that a glass of wine or two at the end is fine but I'm not one to take chances.

  • My doc encouraged me to drink red wine when I was pregnant with my daughter. He said it would help me relax and consequently lower my blood pressure. I've had a sip of wine since being pregnant this time around and I hate it. I just stay away all together.

  • Not one drop! Ask a mom with a fetal alcohol syndrome how much it took, it can be one shot of wine! No. You can't imagine the work and loss of sleep and worry you will go through. Think of yourself. The kid can't make a decision, you have to. With deep affection for all mommies, Kim

  • I asked 5 midwives while I was pregnant. Each of them said not to have any!! There is no telling how your body and your babies body will handle. Remember, a babies liver is flat when they are born because they do not need it while in the woom. There was 1 study that said red wine is ok. ONE out of many. I am going with the many.

You can get the benefits of red wine from other sources. It is the grape juice in the wine that gives health benefits. So drink grape juice. If you need to relax, meditate, go for a drive/walk, read a book, take a bath, etc.

I know it is difficult to watch everyone enjoy champagne, wine, and cocktails during the holidays! It drove me crazy. But it is only 1 year and you are making an investment in your childs health that will last a life time!

  • While a small amount of wine or something probably won't hurt the baby (especially if you're past the first trimester), there's no indication of how much alohol consumption is too much. Since we don't know that, most doctors will tell you to stay away completely.

And the red wine thing is a general health benefit throughout your life; it can help your heart and lower your blood pressure if you drink a couple of ounces every day (not during pregnancy).

  • I think it's really reckless to drink during pregnancy. It's playing russian roulette with your baby. I have stated my opinion about this many times. Is a glass of wine or two worth it? If it is, go ahead.
