Can you get pregnant if you are extended breastfeeding?

I currently am EBF'ing a 6 mo old who is not on solids as of yet. I have had 2 periods that were regular and am about 3 days late for my 3rd. I recently took Reglan to boost my milk supply so I'm wondering if the boost could have made it so I didn't ovulate or at least delayed it, making me NOT have a period. I have tested (this past Fri) and got a neg. but haven't tested since. I don't "feel" pregnant but do have an increase in discharge (TMI), not the runny stuff but the thick sticky kind you get when you odor so it's not an infection.

  • You could be pregnant. Or your cycle could just be screwed up because you're still EBF. I don't know if reglan can affect your cycle. I would test again in the morning if I were you.

  • My mom exclusively breastfed me and ended up pregnant with twins. Yes, you could be pregnant. If you had unprotected sex, you could be pregnant. It's that simple. Breastfeeding is not a substitute for birth control.

  • Breastfeeding is not contraception, and while breastfeeding it could take quite awhile for your period to become regular.

  • breastfeding is def not a form of contraception by any means.

you could be pregnant if you have been having sex. wait a while longer and take a test or get a blood test done.

  • OP Here...Flo reared her ugly head this morning so not pregnant! I am aware that BF'ing is not birth control. My 2nd is proof of that and I was also using minipill and STILL got preggo with her. We are using condoms but those are only like 97% effective anyway.  The 6mo is our 4th in 6 years and while I'm thankful for my obvious fertility, to have 3 kids in 2 1/2 years (which is what would have happened had I been preggo b/c I have an almost 2yo now) on top of the 6 & 5yo I currently have would have been hard.

Thanks for all who took the time to answer!

  • I know this is an old question...but I just have to comment on the notion that a 6 month old is EXTENDED BFing???
EXTENDED is beyond the recommended 1 year or 2 years...not the MINIMUM 6 months.
It's GREAT that you are (or were) at all...just hoping we don't take a huge step back culturally from poor terminology.
