How do I stop my dog from chewing everything?

I have an almost two year old golden retriever that we adopted from a shelter about 5 months ago. She is driving me crazy! We have been to obedience training, and she has made some gains, she sits, lays down, stays a little. But she still chews EVERYTHING. If any toy, sock, cup, anything is in reach, she will destroy it. She has plenty of her own toys, and she knows they are hers, but she will not leave the other things alone. Also, she licks my two year old daughter's face constantly, and knocks her down. She must be watched anytime she is in the house, so she is often stuck in her own little room because she can't be trusted in the rest of the house. I have taken her to training, watched It's Me or the Dog and the Dog Whisperer shows.. I need to make progress with this dog, and soon! Advice? Thanks!!

  • I have 2 dogs and worked at a pet store for a number of years. I agree with some things people have said...exercise is good. A daily walk or fetch in the yard to get out energy. Make sure the dog is eating enough and has enough water. The dog could be chewing for attention which the daily walk or fetch would help with. A close eye on the dog and correcting the dog when caught chewing things it shouldn't combined with allowing the dog to chew good things should help the situation. So when the dog is in it's 'room' give the dog good things to chew (no too much raw hide though...pigs ears are natural and won't hurt the dog and toys it's can't completely destroy). Show the dog teh toy...and when the dog chews that praise him or her. Just some ideas...Good LUCK.

  • Note: She does get exercised in the yard and on walks daily. She's not stuck in the room all day, she's either outside or in her room if I'm not watching her constantly.

  • I'm dealing with the same problem! My husband recently brought home a pitmix, and he's distroying my house!! He's about 4 months old and growing FAST. The only thing that has worked is making sure he knows who's the boss (he's not the alpha male) Being firm and to the point.

  • I would also recommend not getting her chew toys. My dog was awesome at never chewing things up...but when I would buy her bones to chew on all of a sudden everything else turned into chew toys as well. As soon as I stopped buying her bones to chew on and lectured her if she did try to chew things up she quit and I never had a problem with chewing again.

I just don't think they can tell the difference between what they are allowed to chew on and what they are not allowed to chew on.

  • Have you checked into "clicker training"? It's pretty simple, with a clicker (about $2 at pet stores) and some treats you can train your dog to do just about anything. You could also try keeping her on a leash and just keeping her near you at all times. And continuously praise her for being good. Best of luck!!
