What do you keep your heater's thermostat set at during the winter?

What is your thermometer set at for the winter? Or what will it be set at? Is it the same, higher or lower than previous years? Have you changed habits like this one due to the state of the economy right now?

  • Our winters are brutal but we keep our thermostat at 62-65, depending on the time of day. Yes, it's cool, but we wear sweaters and slippers and it's quite manageable. Our heating bills are a non-issue as a result.

  • We have pretty cold winters here in NY and mine is lower than it has been the last couple of years. We have one that you can program and the highest it is set for is 65, at night it drops all the way to 61. We do have small space heaters in the kids' rooms set at 69 so it stays plenty warm for them. My dh and I like it cooler at night to sleep and we have an electric blanket in case we do get cold. And yes, this is to try to save a little extra in heating cost this year.

  • I always try to keep the thermostat at 69 or 70. But my hubby always complains of being cold and turning it up to 73. And then it's like a sauna in our house. It drives me nuts. I feel it's winter, it's supposed to be a LITTLE chilly. And if you're cold, put on a sweater, socks, slippers, blanket, or whatever to warm up. There's no reason to have the heat that high.

  • We do 72 for daytime, 71 at night. Tried 70 at night, but it gets too chilly B4 the heat kicks on. I would keep it colder than that at night, but DS-2 has asthma, and the baby also doesn't need to get chilled. So I fry all night while everyone else sleeps!!! :)

  • During the day, when the patio blinds are open, we generally keep it about 73. At night, we turn it down to 70 because we use a hot steam vaporizer in the room. It gets way too hot if we have it any warmer. I used to own this "TOTALLY AWESOME" king sized water-bed. That was wonderful for winter nights... but it's long gone. Oh, the good ole days.
