My baby is teething. What should I do to relieve the pain?

My husband went and bought Baby Orajel teething swabs to rub on my baby's gums. He is 3 mos and it says for 4 mos and older. Would you/have you used it on a baby smaller. It's active ingredient is benzocaine 7.5% I tried hylands teething tabs but I don't think they help because I can't get them under his tongue and he is still fussy and chewing on his fingers afterward. I'm not sure what else to do to comfort him. I've also tried letting him chew on cold teething rings.

  • My son loves to chew on a cold washcloth.he is 8 months and still NO you may be in for a long ride..if he is really fussy there isn't any harm in giving him some tylenol.

  • I use baby oragel on my son and have since he was 2 mos per dr's orders. He's been teething since 2 mos old and is now 6 mos with 7 teeth. Between oragel i would give him a frozen teething ring and a frozen binky to help sooth as well. Good luck!

  • I've been using baby oragel since I swear almost when I had him - I always thought it was teething cause he was chewing on his hands but It turns out that chewing on their hands is their only way to show their discomfort at this age ( besides crying ) I am not saying that your little one is not teething, its just some added info - I started oragel at 1 month and his first tooth came at 7 months... • i started giving my daughter the orajel at like 3mths old.

however my daughter is now almost 9mths old and is now just cutting her FIRST tooth so like the ladies above said.....goodluck! it may be a long run lol.

my daughter did start to show signs of teething around 3mths so...

however, you can help them by the teething tablets, cold wash clothes, teething rings, and i have found my daughter LOVES to chew on WARM wash clothes. and you can also give your baby some tylenol or motrin if you feel comfortable...

i'd also say maybe a little bit of cold juice too...

and if all else fails, ask your child's doctor but i've pretty much done it all and realized that they may be miserable regardless, so best of luck!

  • I've never used Oragel on my son, but with the Hylands teething tablets, I dissolve them in water in a syringe & give it to my son through the syringe. Just a little water... maybe a teaspoon with 2 tablets. It works like a charm! Also, after your LO is 6 months old, he can have Motrin, which is great for teething. I agree with the previous suggestions of wet washcloths-- my son also liked that from time to time, but he mainly just wants to chew on his fingers & pacifier. He didn't get any teeth until he was 9 months old, though, so it may not be a short ride! Good luck!

  • I didn't because I'm nervous about stuff like that. But obviously other moms have done it and nothing happened. Just depends on how you feel about it. I might at least check with the doctor first.

  • I never used the Orajel on my son. I got some and put it on my gums and thought it was terrible. Needless to say, I did not use it for him. I personally do not think it is good to use it. I bought some natural oil at my local health food store for teething and use that when he is really fussy. Herbs for Kids is the brand.

  • My daughter was teething horribly at 3 months old as well. We gave her the teething tabs and it was a miracle! Because she was so little, I used to put the tab on my finger and hold it in her mouth until it dissolved. It really didn't make too much of a difference if its under their tongue.

    Good luck with the teething!
