Is soy milk as healthy as whole milk?

I breast feed my 1 year old son, but am trying to get him used to drink milk from a cup . He wont drink cow milk by its self, but loves the vanilla soy milk. So I have been mixing them. Do you think soy milk has as much nutrition as cow milk??

  • My kids had a problem with reg. milk and have been drinking vanilla soymilk for years and they are 14 & 16 and are doing great, never sick, ever...But find out from your pediatrician if it would make you feel more comfortable. I did it without talking to mine but I don't recommend that to anyone since you only know your children's history...

  • actually soy is alot healthier.... my mom tried to get our family to go to only soy because of all the research she did...however with males if they are on it long it enough it makes their voice high pitched because it produces estrogene and cause males to grow little boobs. i swear i'm not crazy LOL

  • There is not a problem with soy milk. Yes, there are some studies out that say it "can" be bad. However, my son is allergic to milk and has to drink soy. Both his pedi and the allergist both say that the studies that have been released are not enough evidence for them to say not to give my son soymilk.

They enrich the soymilk with extra vitamins (like whole milk) now, too.

  • I would discuss this with your pediatrician. You may be able to mix breast milk with whole milk and gradually reduce the amount of breastmilk. (When we switched from formula to soy milk we did it one oz. at a time).

My twins drink soy milk because one has a dairy allergy. They're 2 yrs old and we're currently giving him small amounts of skim milk in his soy milk with the hope of helping him outgrow the dairy allergy. I'm not doing this because I'm afraid soy milk will harm him but because it'd open up his diet a bit.

  • Soy milk is fine. None of my kids drink cow milk. No human needs cow milk. There are plenty of other ways to get those fats, the calcium and Vitamin D for your child.

  • Soy milk can be bad because it mimics estrogen. I know of a 4 year old girl who got a lump in her breast and the dr said it could be from the soy milk. (estrogen can cause cysts.) I would keep trying the milk, but if he won't drink it keep giving him breast milk until he is eating table food well. Then just make sure he gets his 3 dairy servings a day.

  • When my son gets off of formula, he will have to be transitioned to soy milk because of lactose intolerance. (We are leaving him on formula until 18 months because of feeding issues).

He has a nutritionist that specializes in 0-3 years. She says that soy milk is okay as long as there is Vitamin D and Calcium in them. She did say that you really have to check the labels to make sure there is enough to be comparable to whole milk. She also said there are other alternatives like rice milk, which is sweet like the vanilla soy.
