  • My kids have homework since kindergarten; ridiculous amounts of homework. We certainly never did at that age. I do not agree with it.

  • Once or twice a week my first grader will have a math worksheet to do, that takes her most of 5 minutes to finish. She also has her take home journal with her weekly vocabulary words that she has to read to me or dh and we have to sign it. That's it so far.

  • My son is in second grade now, and did have homework during first. He got homework packets each Monday with 1-2 sheets needing to be done a day. On good days when he settled down and got busy, he could be done in 10-15 minutes. Now that he's in second, his weekly homework packets do take more time, but not enough that I feel he's being mistreated in any way. He spends around a half hour now per day, sometimes less.

  • He has a different book to bring home to read every day, but it is a simple emergent reader book. Then two or three times a week he gets worksheets that are only the front of one sheet. On Fridays he takes spelling tests of 5 words he has all week to practice. Also on Fridays any work that he didnt do in class comes home for him to finish.

  • I did not have homework in first grade but I did work in several schools - it seems the area that I live in every child has homework. Even pre-school children had homework.

  • I don't remember having first grade homework...unless it was part of a classroom project (like bringing in a picture of something). The kids at the schools around here are sent home with kindergarten homework which is silly IMO.

We homeschool so there's no need for homework. I see firsthand what my kids struggle with and what we need to take more time working on. When they're older, they will have independent study...reading specific chapters or doing research of some sort on their own.

  • My 1st grader has homework every night. I don't remember having it at that age but I think it's great to get them in the habit when they're young.

  • Honestly, I don't remember if I had homework or not. My first grader does, though. He's got 2 poems and a list of 10 spelling words for the week. He has to read the poems every night, and practice his spelling words. The homework comes home on Friday and goes back the next Friday.

My Kindergardener has homework, too. A letter practice page (she has to trace the letters, write her own and draw a picture of something that starts with that letter) comes home every other day, and she has flash cards with sight words on them, along with a small book every day. (The books usually go for about a week, too.)
