Should you have the "shoe rule" at your house?

As far as I knew, most people took their shoes off before entering someone else's home; or at least asked first.

If it's just us in our own home we normally take them off. The only time they're on and on the carpet is if we're about to leave; or, if we're just coming home... but then take 'em off. But i thought that was just common sense. Others don't seem to think so...

I actually thought it was quite rude for people to just step into my house without doing so... rude for not take it into consideration anyway. If we're having a party, then it could go either way... whatever most of the guests just happen to do.

Is it just because i'm asian? haha. just curious...

  • We take our shoes off when we're home just out of comfort. Many people I know leave their shoes on though, so I don't think it's necessarily an issue of culture.

  • Shoes off in the house. Company usually does too if they are staying a while. I don't like the idea that who knows what gets tracked into the house and trailed on the rug where my children play. Don't get my wrong, I vacuum everyday, but still, that only cleans so deep. I can't really shampoo my rug everyday.

  • We take our shoes off when we enter the house, and I ask at other people's houses or look to see if they are wearing shoes or not and follow suit. I do it because I am a clean freak, but my husband is Japanese and is just used to it. It would be a huge no-no to step into his grandmother's house with shoes on!

  • Well, I personally do it for my comfort. After being in the all day, they need to come off. I am not a clean freak as someone said, I am comfortable. You can even come to my house and put your feet up, thats how comfortable I am.

  • We take shoes off in the hallway when we enter the house and we also only put them on in the hallway. I do not accept any shoes in our houese!

And i dont know a single family that accepts it.. .well here in germany i dont. My in-laws in the states seem to think a little different about the shoe rule in the house.

my aunt-in-law they always walk through the whole house with their shoes. and i just think thats nasty. i always got my socks dirty when i was there. im not saying the family itself is dirty ect. its just the shoes get on the carpet and rest of the floor. its so gross, especially when its rainy ect.

my husband was used to that sh*t too and he still sometimes forgets to take his shoes off, i think you can imagine how this always ends. HAHAHAHA

  • I take my shoes off for comfort, not because I want to keep the carpet clean or anything. I can't stand to wear laced up shoes or "fashion" shoes in the house. I either go barefoot, wear socks, or wear my fuzzy slippers =D

  • No, we've never done that! I was never raised that way either... Don't know anyone that was... I know a couple of people that have a sign saying "Please Take Off Shoes" those were the only places I ever did it... The rule in my house is when you take your shoes off don't leave them in the middle of the floor for the rest of us to trip on... We're still working on that one...

  • We used to leave our shoes on, but after living in Japan for fours year, we got used to taking our shoes off when we walked in. Now, we take them off once we walk in the house and when we go to someone else's house we usually take them off to cuz it's second nature to do so.

  • We take them off here, but don't require out guests to. We have hardwood floors though. I know that at our old house when we had carpet, I'd ask my parents to when they came over but typically not other people.

Personally, I am very uncomfortable taking my shoes off in other peoples homes, unless it's someone I know quite well. I typically wear shoes that are open toed and don't require socks and the thought of my (sometimes sweaty) feet on someone elses floors mortifies me. My husband is also very VERY uncomfortable taking his shoes off. We went to his cousins party last month and they required shoes off on the carpet so he stayed in the kitchen the entire party- for a few hours.
