What are my odds of having a second child with autism?

I can only tell you from personally experience. I have three children, two boys and a girl. One of my child has autism the other two are fine.

With anything else there is a risk when you have another child. You may have a perfectly healthy baby, you may have another child with autism or you could have a child with heart issues or a host of other health issues. What ifs should not prevent you from living your life.

They have not found a genetic link to autism. Your odds of having a second child with autism are not any higher because you have one child with it.

Odds are about 1 out of 140 or so just like the first time.

every child is different. if you want to have another child, then go ahead and start trying. i dont believe there is a genetic link to autism. Good luck though! And congrats on the upcoming nuptuals!!!

ok so i have a friend who has 2 autistic children - because both her and her husband (the father of both kids) both cary the autism gene - ask your doctor or talk to a genetisist to see what the odds are that your fiancee is also carying the autism gene.

My daughter had two autistic sons in a row. You may have the genes to pass it on or it may have been the boy's father. The decision as to whether to take the risk or not is yours.

When my son was diagnosed, the Dr told me to really think hard before having another child, for he/she could have it too.(I guess she didn't see my wee baby bump). Scared me! But he came out fine, "normal" and on track. He's 3 1/2 now. BTW I looked it up, the chances of having another autistic child was like 2%!

It is my understanding that IF it is genetic and runs in your family (wich every case is not) then your odds are higher...but there is also a real good chance the other child will be fine =)

You are 4X my likely to have another child with some form of autism if one of your children already has it. The responses saying that you are not more likely to have a second child with autism are not correct.
