Would you let your older kids in the delivery room with you?

We live very far away from our families and have no friends here. when our 2nd baby is born our daughter will be close to 3 years old. We have been thinking what we are going to do with her when I go into labor! My mother is trying to come up around the due date, but still if labor happens at a random time what shoudl we do with our DD? Have you ever had your small children in the room during delivery?

  • My oldest child was 4 when my second child was born. She stayed in the room for most of the labor only because I had an epidural and was not in any pain. We gave her childrens Benedryl after I dilated past 5 cm. She slept through the delivery!

  • Did I jsut read that right? You drugged your daughter? I would say 3 is pretty young to have in the delivery room. They are going to see you in pain which is the worst part of it. I would ask a coworker or your hubby's coworker if they can be called in case of an emergency

  • Yeah, I wouldn't want to have to deal with a child while I was trying to have another. It may make you want to give her away! LOL!

  • Yes I drugged my child with Benedryl because her pediatrician recommended that I give it to her. I is perfectly harmless when given in the correct dosage!

  • Well, I won't be drugging my child, but she will be with us in during my labor.
She will be 2 1/2. I want her there, as does my husband.
Your husband is going to do some double duty of labor partner and dad.

  • Well, if there's no other choice then bring her. Bring books, games, snacks... whatever! And benedryl while in labor would be okay with me too! There's nothing wrong if you don't over do it. I wouldn't do it all the time, but one day, when your havign a baby.. yes i would! Anyways, the best thing would be for soemone to watch her, hopefully your Mom makes it in time

  • We're in the same boat. All our family is an 8-hour drive away, and I have no real friends here. I have gotten friendly with my husband's coworker's wife, and she generously offered to take my girls until my parents can get here. I feel very nervous about it and guilty even, but we will repay them big time. I'm going to be worried the entire time if my kids are driving this woman crazy! If she hadn't offered, I'd probably be having the baby on my own while my husband watched the kids in the waiting room. They are 4 and 2, and I think it would be too much for all of us to have them in the room. Good luck!

  • MY HOSPITAL WIL NOT ALLOW CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 7YRS OLD INTO THE DELIVERY ROOM AND THEY EVEN NEED TO TAKE A CLASS TO DO SO.
ASK EVERY FRIEND YOU HAVE AND EVERY RELATIVE. I PERSONALLY WOULD ASK SOMEONE TO TAKE MY KID, I WOULD NOT HAVE THE PATIENCE AT THAT POINT.

  • i was thinking of having him there my hospital leaves it up to you, ...he's close to 2 but my s.o. ended up feeling against it, thought it might be scary for him. luckily we have a few back-up plans. friends living close with a same age girl, his sis with a 4 yr old boy almost 1 hr away in rush hour, and our parents are really only 4-5 hr away including the ferry so my mom may be here.

  • oh and drugging.... sounds a bit strange to me, is your doc ok with that? maybe they have another idea for a solution? a portable dvd player is a bit less invasive
