Is it better to get an epidural or have a natural childbirth?

My DF and I were talking about labor the other night. I had our son in a natural childbirthing center. I asked him if he thought it would be more painful to have a natural birth or to get an epidural. I don't mean have the epidural for the birth, I mean actually getting it put in. He said hands down it would scare him more to get an epidural. I am terrified of needles, too. I don't know which would be worse. Any opinions? Thanks ladies.

  • I've had both, and hands down, the natural labor did feel worse, but I don't see how it couldn't. The epidural doesn't take that long to put in, vs being in labor not being a picnic. Despite all this, I do prefer natural childbirth just because of the way I felt after giving birth.

  • The epiduarl didnt hurt me, he put it in during a contaction it was just a little pinch. But the after effects suck. I've had horrble low back problems ever since i had my first one.But I 'll probbly get one with this one too.

  • Well i ended up in a c-section because my lil 1 was 10lbs, and wouldnt come out, but i got the epidural before that, i waited till the contractions were bad enough that i wanted it because i have a fear of needles too. And when they did it i barely felt it because i was too focused on the contractions.

  • I had all my 4 totally natural never even had an IV. I agree with your man. Thats why I never did it. I am terrified of needles too. Plus the horror stories that I have heard. Plus I did it all natural with my first so I knew I could do it again. I also like the fact that when the baby is out I can get up take a shower and what not, and not be hooked up to anything or wait for my legs to be back to normal. But I also realize everyone's pain tolerance is different and so women can't or wont do it with out and that's OK too.

  • I had my first three naturally and have an extreme fear of needles so I 100% understand where youre coming from. With my 4th I ended up getting an epidural because I was induced and it took so long and I was in sooooooo much pain. It was a lifesaver except you know when you go to push? Its alot harder to know when to do that because you dont feel alot. With my 5th I went for the epidural again and they did it wrong and I only had pain relief on one side and now I have a fatty tumor where they placed it which is causing alot of pain in my back and Im going to have to have it removed. There are plusses and minussed to both. Looking back I probably wouldnt have gotten one with my 5th, and only got one with my 4th because of the length and complications involved in his birth.

  • I was all about going natural, no nothing with my first! Everyone walked out of the room and the pain was getting horrible and I let out one good scream and that was it! I got my epidural and I didn't even have to think about getting it with my last two. I was in so much pain with my first and so into my breathing I didn't hear a word they were saying or even felt the epidural. I did feel it with my last two and it's not bad at all. Also depends on how good the anithesiologist is.
