Are dachshunds good with children?

Do you have one or know some one who owns one? My SO wants to get one for the family this christmas. We have a 13 month old and she is a little rough sometimes. I had a weiner dog snap at me when I was about 10 so I'm a bit concerned. Please give some reassurance, or a warning! We have no other pets.

  • i had a part weiner dog and jack russel mix..i got him when i was 16 years old. there were no kids around him and he only bit a 3 yr old one time..but he did it becuase he was born with one bad eye that made it blind and he eventually went almost blind in the other..i dont think it was the fact that it was a kid, i think its just becuase he couldnt see well..i would just watch your baby and dog together and get it as a puppy..as with any dog. good luck and i would go for it.

  • My in-laws have a weiner dog and she has been mostly great with my kids. But the told me that when they went to visit some friends that she growled at their 3 year old granddaughter when she got too close. Also the other day, Maggie (the dog) kind of snipped at my daughter. But in the dogs defense, she was trying to eat and my daughter was messing with her food. Maggie didn't bite her, just kind of lunged and barked. My daughter got the message, that's for sure. All in all, I think they are good dogs. My friend had one that grew up with her son and he was a good dog.

  • I have had many dachshunds over the years...general concensus.....they aren't kid friendly dogs. For one, the little ones don't realize how they can hurt them (their backs) and they generally take to one person in the house rather than being "everyone's dog". My dachshund I have now, I have had for 10 years. She has NEVER been aggressive with our daughter, but our daughter was taught how to handle her and to not squeel like a maniac, etc. This dogs hates 99% of other kids though and she has bitten a few of them. She is as loyal of a dog as one gets to our daughter though. I would say it depends on your family...AND they are some of the HARDEST dogs to house train so if that's an issue...don't get a puppy...then again, some adults refuse to be house broke. They get mad or jealous and will use the bathroom in the house out of spite.

  • That said....I LOVE dachshunds to pieces.....I think they are some of the best.... A great family dog, is a bassett hound if you like a laid back kind of dog. And.....mutts from the pound make awesome dogs too....I am an advocate of rescue dogs. I do have a dachshund/bassett mix and he is the happiest dog on the face of the earth day or night, rain or shine and he was very easy to house train and train in general.

  • My neighbor/friends Dachsund let my son pet her (I was making sure he did not grab or hit ) and she gave him kisses. When he stopped petting her and stood up, she lunged for his face and bit him for no reason at all.

I have another friend who used to breed and show Dachshunds. When I told her what happened she said, " I could have told you not to let him near a Dachshund,"

This, coming from a longtime breeder of Dachshunds, is the advice I would heed.

  • I personally would not recommend a wiener dog for kids that small. They have back trouble and they can be a little snippish(not all of them of course! training is key!) . If they do decide that that is what they want then I recommend that they be very very careful with the kids and dog together. train and socialize the dog well and watch ther child closely so they will learn to not be to rough. I think a heartier breed might be a little better though. Maybe a sheltie, beagle or a schnauzer are all good dogs.

  • Sharon -- I have noticed that my dachshund hates sudden movements from people other than "her" family. If you come in and she "appears" to settle down...you make a move...she's on high alert. I have always made my dogs behave, and she is no exception...but I also realize to her..this is "her" house and she is protecting her family.

  • My dachshund has never bitten anyone in his 3 years of life....and I have a two year old. Yes, I know that some breeds are not recommended for children, but I think that any dog would be good around children if you give it a loving home and plenty of discipline. My dachshund only growls at my daughter if he's under a blanket and she comes and jumps on him. Wouldn't you? The most he's done is growled at her. He is also one of the friendliest dogs to anyone that comes into our house. He jumps on their laps and makes a little doggy nest. So, I do not believe that dachsunds are not good around kids, just because of my experience.
But.....I know a great watchdog breed that truly wants to protect your household and loves to play. I have an American Eskimo. He plays a little rough, but he knows to be gentle around my daughter. It's amazing. Plus, he's white and fluffy.
