How old is too old for a child to bathe with his or her parent?

I know a family whose little girl is about 5. Her daddy still gets in the tub with her and they bathe together. Is this wrong or appaling to you, or does anyone else do this still? Would it be different if it were a 5 year old boy and his mother? PLEASE no bashing, I want to know everyone's opinion and I don't want anyone to be afraid to answer. How old is the OLDEST you would bathe with your child of the opposite sex? AND how old is the oldest you would bathe with your child of the same sex?

  • My husband put a stop to bathing with our oldest daughter when at 2, she reached up and gave little man a tug while his eyes were closed rinsing out his hair. I swear it was the shortest shower he ever took. Due to that my middle daughter never got to shower with him. He did bathe with our littlest one until about 2 weeks ago but he said she's at just the right height, every time he looks at her it seems like she's looking at "it". LOL

I guess I think it's fine until one or the other is uncomfortable with it. It's bound to happen sooner than later with any parent/child of the opposite sex so I guess at 5 if they are both still ok with it then I don't see a problem.

I have all daughters and to be honest, I have no plans on ever stopping showering with them due to it being "unacceptable". I'm about to stop with my oldest because she's a water hog...but other than that...whenever they don't want to I guess.

  • I stopped letting my boys shower with me when they were about 3 years old. Actually, my middle son, is only 3 now and occationally I'll get suprised while I'm in the shower by a naked boy peeking around the corner.

  • I do not think there is anything wrong with this. I think that ever family is different and that if it does not make the parent or the child uncomfortable then it is okay. In my house I no longer bath with my boys because they are 11 and 9 and they like to shower on their own. I do still help them if they ask.

My daughter is 7 and sometimes she still baths with me. She would even still take a shower with her father if she had to.

We are very open in our house so my children are comfortable with being naked and the opposite sex. I think that if you make a big deal about these things then so will your children.

As I stated before I do believe it is each families own preference.

  • I think its dependant on the family and how they run their household. Some households are more open about nudity, others are not. That being said for me my dd whose 3.5 still showers with me sometimes, but shes never showered with her father. My girls have never showered or bathed with their dads, but my boys have with me. I want to say they were around 3 or 4 when they stopped.

  • Yup, just depends on your fam, I guess. My hubby showers with our daughter (14 months). I can very vaguely remember showering with my dad. I can definitely remember taking baths with my mom- I mean, I probably did that from time to time til I was 8 or 9!
I don't know how long I will bathe with my daughter... she has definitely noticed Mama's "woo" and Daddy's "wee", but it doesn't bother me much- I think it's normal.

  • I remember, growing up; when someone was in the bath tub, that was a good time to go in and chat with them! My brother and sister were probably in high school before this stopped. We were really open with nudity!(Except my dad- he would walk from the shower to their room naked and hang out in his undies, but he didn't do the bath time chat thing) I still do that with my mom and sister though.
    Is that weird?

  • I think it isnt wrong unless there is some type of behavoir to make it wrong....each family has there own ideas of whats right. My husband wouldnt shower even now with our 19 month old Daughter but he comes from a very christian modest family. i took showers with my mom until i was 7 or so. and my younger brothers did too.
