Does using a soft blanket or bedding in a baby's crib put the infant at risk of SIDS?

I READ IN A MAGAZINE NOT TO PUT A SOFT BLANKET IN THE CRIB WITH THE BABY BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN LINKED TO SUDDEN INFANT DEATH.... IS THIS TRUE? HAS ANYONE ELSE HEARD THIS?
I WAS PLANNIN ON BRINGING A SOFT BLANKET TO THE HOSPITAL FOR WHEN WE TAKE HIM HOME, SHOULD I NOT?

  • They now believe that the cause of sides is that when the baby breaths out the carbon minoxide settles in the crib and they breathe it back in. that is why they say no bumpers ect, keeping a ceiling fan on is supose to keep the air circulated, my son always slept with a blanket

  • Yes it is true. However, blanket in the crib isnt the only way that SID happens. SID can take place for no apparent reason. Sometime they cannot determin the cause of death in SID. SID will more likely to occure if the mother smoke or being around smokers while pregnant. But crib death is just on inccident of SID. There many unknown causes.

  • a blanket is fine. Use it to swaddle. We used thin ones when my son was younger so that if it covered his face you could still breath through it. A puffy blanket doesn't really lead to SIDS it leads to suffication.

  • I used a blanket to swaddle my son and I used a couple to cuddle him up against so that the crib wouldn't seem so big. I have heard that leaving it in there can lead to SIDS so I would keep them tight so he couldn't choke, plus he wasn't moving enough to have made a difference.
