Can I use homemade formula?

I am strongly considering switching to homemade formula for my DD who is 5 mnths.. I found a good recipie and the docs ok'd it. Wanted to know if others are considering the same due to the FDA's findings and lack of evidence of the effects of melamine? If so I have a good doc approved recipie!!

  • I breastfeed and DD won't take formula at this point. Luckily for us, she did when she needed to be getting supplements because she wasn't thriving.

I'd be interested in the formula recipe your doctor agree to. (And kudos to you for getting approval!)

  • I looked into it and decided not to. The entire process, I'm sure I'd just slightly mess it up and it would then be dangerous to feed it. You just have to be way too careful in the whole process, I didn't want to risk it. I let the companies deal with all of that hassle.

  • I never used formula, so I can't really say. Have you considered inducing lactation so that you could provide breastmilk? (another way to "make the milk yourself!) Adoptive moms do it all the time.

  • Fortunately, I was able to nurse (and still nurse) my son. However, if in the future I am not able to nurse (for whatever reason) I will be using a home made formula...
    So. Share! =o)

  • I'm sorry but I'm just not that paranoid. Kids have been taking formula for years. I'm so glad to hear you got a doctors approval though that is more than a lot of other mom's I have seen here. Good for you!!

  • Not homemade formula..I, like the first poster, am afraid I would screw it up. I feed Similac Advaced, anyhow.....not on the list ;) I DO however plan on feeding homemade baby food when the time comes. That way, my DD can have fresh foods with no preservatives:) We'll see how long that lasts, though...hehe

  • well.. DD can't use similac, we tried that a while ago and it upset her poor little tummy. The docs office did, of course, recommend staying on powdered manufactured formula, since "the FDA said it was ok", but like I explained to them, I'm really just not convinced that the FDA has any better idea about the dangers than anybody else. They haven't completed any reasearch.. they don't have long term testing done or planned, and Dec 1 there was a report of 2 babies in New Mexico getting sick and one dying because of yet another dangerous agent in powdered formula. It's enough for me.. I'm switching!! The doc definitely said it looked like a great formula, just to make sure baby gets some infant vitamins as well!! I'll send out that recipie to those who wanted it in a few
