How do I stop my 6-year-old from sucking her thumb?

I don't want to spend 75.00 on a thumb gaurd or use hot sauce! Thanks!

  • I as 12 before I stopped sucking my thumb. I was going away to overnight camp and was afraid I'd be the only one who was still sucking my thumb. That's what got me to quit.

  • kinda like hot that nail stuff to help you stop biting your nails...its hot! or have you tried just painting her nails...tell her that sucking her thumb will make the paint chip...maybe she'll stop to keep her nails pretty and a bright color might remind her before it gets to her mouth

  • this is kind of embarrassing, but i'm a grown up and i have yet to break the habbit, (i don't do it in public, only when i'm tired, frustrated, bored, or stressed). I never had a problem with it in public and can always keep it under control when we have people over. i wish i could be of more help, but, unfortunately, it is a very tough habbit to break. my parents tried the hotsauce, the nail biting stuff, everything they could think of and after i was a teenager and still doing it, they just gave up and hoped i would outgrow it. i would compare it to smoking. its just as hard to give up.

  • My daughter sucked her thumb all the time. We lived in Wisconsin so in the winter her thumb would crack and bleed. We would have to put lotion (if there were no bleeding cracks) or band-aids on her thumb and eventually the habit was broken.

  • you know my honeys little cousin Moire is like 10 and still sucks her thumb! They have tried hot sauce... bitter stuff... they have gotten her oral mouth gaurds so she wont suck her thumb and she still does it! And the gaurd that the dentist put in his way hardcore! It has little spikes on it to discourage her from sucking it! Im begining to think that she is never going to stop sucking on her thumb! Good luck!
