What Christmas traditions does your family have?

I was watching Jon & Kate a while back, and it was last year's Christmas episode... They have a certain thing for breakfast every year on Christmas. Kate was talking about how these simple little traditions are important to her to have with the kids. I REALLY want us to have specific cheesy little traditions, too, and I want to start this year, even though Gage is only going to be 11 months on Christmas. When he gets a little bigger, he can help me bake cookies for Santa every Christmas Eve, but what other cute ideas are there? I'm usually pretty good at being cheesy and creative, lol, but I'm drawing a blank.

  • A week or two before Christmas, we bake cookies and write letters to Santa. Santa's Elves come at night to eat the cookies and take the letters to the North Pole.

During December, the kids get hot cocoa, and I get coffee from Starbucks and we drive around looking at Christmas lights, drinking and munching on cookies.

Christmas Eve dinner is always lasagna, Christmas morning breakfast is always biscuits & gravy with Pepsi.

  • I am giving my kids each their own little tree to decorate as they wish.

We do the advent calendar so everyday in December they get to open a new day and get a piece of chocolate.

At my parents house with all the grand kids I bought them a pickle ornament about 10 years ago and all the grand kids get to look for the pickle ornament hidden somewhere in the tree. The kid that finds it first gets a special gift. (something small like candy) but they all have fun looking for it and usually the kid that wins shares it with all of the kids. When my kids are older I will do the pickle as well at home.

  • Oh another thing that we do is have them write letters to Santa. This year Elijah wrote a letter and it read something like this. Ff Ff Ff Ff... you get the idea. A few days later he received a little package from Santa in the mail. It included a letter about how Santa is watching to see if he is naughty or nice and it thanked him for the letter. We also included some really inexpensive and small Santa themed toys and candy in the package. We just make up a post mark, lol.

    It thrills him every time.

  • We always open one present each on Christmas Eve, it's always pj's and slippers. This year I actually have a couple of books I'm going to let them because one is 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Then in the morning, they open up their stockings while I get breakfast going. I make the same thing every year, I actually make it the night before then bake it in the am so it's super easy. After breakfast they get to open the rest of their presents.

  • We also have some traditions...

Sometime in December our whole family goes to Sharon, PA to visit Kraynak's. It's a huge store that has a Christmas tree display inside that you walk through, and at the end you can visit with Santa and get pics. After that store, we go to Daffin's, a large candy store. Then we eat at Quaker Steak & Lube.

My son and I always make our own ornaments. We try to make a different type every year. We keep some and give some away as gifts. We also bake cutout sugar cookies and decorate them. The past two years I've had a little party and had other kids come over to paint their own ornaments and ice cookies with us. We also play some games and do a little craft. It's a lot of fun so I hope to continue that tradition each year as well!

  • cont..

Every year my son gets a special ornament that reflects an interest of his from that year. He has one from every Christmas and will end up with a huge collection when he grows up and moves out on his own.

Every Christmas Eve we leave cookies and milk for Santa and throw reindeer food out on the lawn for his reindeer. He also gets to open a few presents on Christmas Eve...it's always new PJ's, a Christmas book and usually something else like slippers, or a new stuffed toy to sleep with.

Christmas morning breakfast is always hot chocolate and fresh baked cinnamon rolls. We eat our big family dinner early in the day..usually between 1 and 3, so we don't eat a huge breakfast.

We do an Advent calendar that starts Dec. 1 and counts down to Christmas!

  • I usually serve cinnamon rolls on Christmas morning. I put them in as we are opening gifts so they are done when the presents are all opened.
I think those little traditions are very important, too. We always hang the same worn out old posters that my mom put up when I was a kid (30 years ago). We have ornaments on our tree that are as old as I am. I always get the kids coloring books and crayons even though we have a ton already.
We have our big dinner on Christmas Eve then watch a movie, have dessert and the kids take a bath. Then they get to open gifts from each other and 1 from us (and we open any from them). Christmas morning they open their stockings first while everyone else is waking up.

  • Opening up gifts on Christmas Eve was always a tradition for our family and stockings were filled for christms morning. I was one of those young ones that found out early in childhood that Santa was my dad. I went down for a glass of water one year and caught dad under the tree. I started a tradition with my son by buying a Nutcracker every year. I just started this 6 years ago, he is 15 now and will probably stop when he is in early 20's. ~litninbug~

  • I always make Monkey Bread to eat Christmas morning. The kids were allowed to open a gift of their choice Christmas Eve. Unfortunately, for my S/O we had to celebrate his Birthday, and everyone was always too hungry for cake last yr was the 1st yr we chgd to a diff date due to a new Gr-Chd.When my kids were young, we put some gifts under the tree and most after the kids went to bed, stuffed stockings, and the kids left Santa treats,a drink.< & a note. And the kids were alwayse taught what the meaning of Christmas day was.
