What can be substituted for butter shortening?

I am going to be making Classic Thumbprint cookies. The recipe calls for 1 Crisco butter shortening stick or 1 cup Crisco butter shortening. I do not have either one of these items and was wondering if anyone knows if there is a substitution for the butter shortening? Help!

  • Hi There I just Googled this and there is this really cool website for cooking substitutions but here is what I found for your question:

    You could use
    1 cup minus 2 tbsp lard
    1 1/8 cups butter (decrease salt called for in recipe by 1/2 tsp)
    1 1/8 cup margarine (decrease salt called for in recipe by 1/2 tsp)

  • I never use Crisco or lard anymore. Just plain butter.

  • I don't use the butter flavor..just the regular and they turn out fine.
