How can you tell if frozen pork has gone bad?

I found a frozen roast in the back of the freezer. I'm not sure how old it is. How can I tell if it's still good or not? I always hate to see food go to waste!

  • You can thaw it and check it out. It shouldn't go bad in the freezer but most agency reccomend using meat within 6 months after freezing. Check the odor and color and if all seems normal, go for it! I wouldn't use it for one of those recipes that call for medium pork tho. Cook it to at least 165 to make sure you kill any nasties that are hitch hiking along the way. . .(I go for a crock pot pulled pork recipe after I freeze to be safe)

  • Can you estimate the time it's been in there? If it has no freezer burn, go ahead and thaw it out. If it has no discoloration or foul odors, it is probably fine. If it was wrapped tightly and kept in the coldest part of the freezer, it should keep 6-12 months.

  • I'd thaw it out, then smell it.

  • I don't thing frozen meat can go bad, unless it went bad before you froze it. It can get freezer burn though.

  • Usually by the smell and if its discolored. The smell would be enough to make you sick so you would definitaly know. And if it wasn't frozen by the date on it then its probably bad.
