  • I "think" 16 should be earliest, but a lot of parents do it for the peace of mind of being able to reach their children at any time. It's difficult with the way the world is today . . . you want to have that reassurance and at the same time, that "reassurance" can be the same thing to cause problems. I will cross that bridge when I come to it, fortunately my LO is only almost 6 months. By the time she is 16 in 2024, I will be deciding if I will allow her to get her hovering car license . . . lolol.

  • Our house rule is 12, or when they start 6th grade. That's when they get more freedoms and will actually get some use out of it. Not to mention a little more responsible to not lose or break it. And only as long as they keep grades up and do chores. So far only one of mine has reached that point, and he has been very responsible with it.

  • I totally agree with when they can pay for it. My LO is 6 months so we will make that decision when the time arises.

  • my son has been asking for one since he was 8, and most of his friends since then have their own. Personally I refuse to get him one until he turns 14 possibly 13 depending on how mature he acts and such. As for now, he may be 9 but he acts 6 most of the time so is currently not allowed out of the yard without parental supervision. He used to do great and had lots of freedom and privilages that most kids his age have, but then something happened and he regressed so lost them. I have told him 16 so that he will not keep bugging me, but I plan on it being once he becomes a teen.

  • My oldest will be 11 years old in April. I told her she was going to have to wait until she was at least 12. But since she walks home from school with her younger brother and sister, I decided that she should have one, in case something happens and she needs to call me. And she is very responsible, she takes good care of her things. So I decided to get her a phone, and so far she's done really well with it. It doesn't have a camera on it, all she can do is talk and text. Periodically I check who she's been messaging, who she's called. So far it's working out great. I promised her a better phone for her fifth grade graduation - one with an mp3 player so she can listen to music!
