How can I help relieve constipation in a toddler?

My 16 month old son is suffering from constipation. I give him apple juice three times a day and that doesn't seem to be helping. I was wondering if, perhaps, he is getting too much milk. He has at least four bottles a day. His breakfast is usually hot cereal or waffles, lunch is a pasta dish and dinner is usually pasta with meat or chicken. He is not much on veggies or fruit.

  • Apple juice has very little fiber. Try increasing the whole grains in his diet.

In the meantime, Peach Nectar works like magic. Much better than karo syrup or prune juice. I wouldn't use more than 1 ounce per day.

  • It sounds like he could use more fiber in his diet.....have you tried the multi-grain whole grain waffles? Also, switch to whole wheat pasta, and try to incorporate more veggies and fruits...not only will it help with his constipation, but it will help overall in his health.

I'd try some prune juice...that has always worked for me or my kiddos. :)

  • the apple juice wont work because his system is probably used to it already. Try to give him less sugar (waffles and cereals are usually very sweet). I always recommend baby tea. thats what i give our daughter when she is constipated. and it always helps.

  • i suggest trying to add more fiber to his diet and cut back on all the juice sometimes the sugers in it can make him constipated. But fo a quick fix to get things moving this is a seceret i learned with my son.
put a teaspoon of kyro syurpe in his milk or juice either one is fine. It will make him poop with in 12 to 24hours and once he does find ways to increase the fiber in his diet and get more veggies and fruit in him.

  • Apple juice is not always a natural laxative. It actually made my daughter more constipated. Shes 10 so she was able to tell me that it was making it worse. I might cut back on the milk just a touch and give water. If all these changes don't work, then I would ask the doc for another suggestion like a script or using miralax.

  • No more than 24 ounces of milk (or any dairy) a day. Apple juice actually plugs up some people. Try prune juice. Switch to whole grain waffles and pasta. If he won't eat fresh fruit, try canned fruits that are packed in fruit juice instead of syrup.

You need to get this under control. If he keeps having painful poops, he will start refusing to poop - which will cause his poop to get bigger and harder, which will cause more pain, which will cause him to refuse even more, etc. His lower bowel will become distended and will lose the ability to sense when he has to go. Potty training will become a nightmare since it can take years to get a child over the fear of painful poops.

  • If dietary changes do not clear this up in the next 2 weeks, ask your doctor about putting him on a daily dose of miralax. That's what I ended up doing with my daughter. She gets a small dose everyday so it is impossible for her poop to get hard, no matter how long she refuses to go. Giving Miralax only when constipated is pointless. It must be taken everyday until the fear is long gone.

  • with my daughter we gave her prune juice and it seemed to help. we went to the doctors because it was so bad and they told us that it is part of the transition from formula to milk sometimes it just takes time. i know that isnt too helpful. also try to get him to drink more water even if it is flavored water because that can help too

  • THIS MAY SOUND CRUEL BUT I PROMISS IT REALLY WORKS, USE A SLIVER OF IVORY SOAP AS A SAPOSITORY. ANY TIME MY DAUGHTER IS CONSTIPATED THATS WHAT I DO. PLEASE DONT THINK IM MEAN, ANYTIME ONE OF MY FRIENDS WANT TO KNOW WHAT TO DO FOR CONSTIPATION THAT IS WHAT I TELL THEM TO DO AND THEY THANK ME FOR IT. IT IS THE MOST GENTLE SOAP THERE IS AND MOST ALL OF IT COMES OUT WHEN THEY HAVE A B.M.
