Can I take maternity leave before the baby is born?

I know in CA u can go on maternity leave at 36 weeks. My question is will the doctor put you on even if she thinks you can still work? Or is it more your choice?

  • Are you planning on taking 12 weeks off? If so, I would honestly wait if you can then you can actually spend all 12 weeks with the baby instead of 8.

  • You can also apply for the Family Act Leave after your maternity leave and get an extra 6 weeks.

  • FMLA is the first 12 weeks of your maternity leave. You may get a state leave that's 12 weeks after that but not all companies do it.

  • With me it was my choice to go when I wanted, and I ended up calling the bank and qutting 2 weeks into it because i knew i wouldnt be able to leave my daughter. I felt kinda bad too because they had already paid me for my full 6 weeks in advance too and didnt even ask for any of the money back. I guess because it came from the banks insurance company.
