Is it OK to drink coffee while breastfeeding?

I am breastfeeing, my baby girl is one month old, and I have been drinking some coffee. Just wanted to know if this is bad or could be giving her gas or something.

  • i agree that caffeine isn't good for her. But if you really need to drink it, why not breastfeed first, and then drink the coffee. That way in 2 hrs, when she's hungry again, it'll be out of your system?

  • Small doses is fine. If your baby seems to be upset or have trouble napping after nursing when you have caffeine in your system then try cutting it out. Gas is a likely symptom of her not handling the caffeine well.

If you're drinking it for taste/habit try decaf. If you're drinking it for the energy boost try an apple or other fruit. The natural sugar is much healthier and will give you the energy boost without the crash.

  • Ceffein in moderation is absolutely fine while breastfeeding. Very little actually goes into your breast milk. As with anything, just watch for signs of irritation in your baby. She will let you know if she does not like it.

  • Just keep in mind that while you breast feed she gets everything you do... So if you don't want the caffiene in her system dont put it into yours.

You can drink coffee/caffeine while nursing, just like you can drink it while you're pregnant.

  • Moderate amounts of caffine are totally safe while breastfeeding...no, it will not cause heart palpitations or put your baby in cardiac arrest. It may, however, make her a little harder to put down for a nap. So, just follow her cues. Is she happy (for the most part, I know no baby that small is happy ALL the time, lol), is she sleeping alright? If yes, then it's fine. I drank one or two cups of coffee w/ my little ones. Seriously, when you're not sleeping all night, you NEED some caffine just to function! :)

  • One-two cups of caffeinated tea or coffee a day is generally fine..just watch your baby for any adverse reactions, because all babies are different.
