Can you use ground turkey instead of ground beef?

I've been buying the frozen 1lb roll thing of ground turkey and using in place of ground beef. At $1.26 /lb its cheaper than ground beef and I think healthier. I actually prefer the taste of the turkey to the taste of ground beef. Everyone that eats anything at my house made with ground turkey just loves it and they don't realize its turkey til I tell them. But then when they complain about the cost/quality of the ground beef and I say just buy turkey, they refuse saying that their family will know the difference. Am I the only one? LOL!

  • You are not the only one. I buy the same roll of ground turkey that you do. I pay $1.40 for a pound so it is cheaper and healthier.

I stopped telling people about it though because most people scrunch their nose up at the thought of substituting ground turkey for ground beef.

The only differences that I notice is a lower cholesterol score and a fatter pocketbook.

  • nope you're not. We eat it often. It cuts cost and cuts our red meat intake. I just found for us we need to add more spices than with beef.

  • i tried it to save money and be healthier and it was too bland and I didn't care for the texture. that's just me sister and law and her family love it though. i do love deer meat though and it's free and healthy.

  • I use both because it is cheaper, but I also use the tube of 93/7 ground beef because that's cheaper than what's in the packaging.

  • we use it all the time and no one notices the difference unless I tell them. When it is mixed with spaghetti sauce or in a soup, it tastes the same. We buy the pre-made turkey burgers too

  • To OP-What brand do you get, I have tried a few times and my son and husband instantly say "this is that turkey crap isnt it?" I don't find that much of a difference, but my son says the texture is different and my hubby says it tastes funny.

  • We use turkey for our tacos and chili. I haven't made the move to replace other stuff with it yet. We can't taste the difference in the tacos or chili. Maybe it's because of all the spices. We actually prefer our tacos made with turkey now. It has a lighter taste to it.

  • I made turkey burgers once and my experience was that they were more squishy than beef, so they didn't hold together as well.

  • goalliemom93,
I use the Louis Rich brand of ground turkey I think is what it is (its in a red package). Makes a great turkey meatloaf, is excellent in homemade burritos, chili, hamburger helper, shepherds pie, anything that uses ground beef!
