When do babies start to sleep through the night?

My son is 5 month and will sleep from about 8pm to 2am and wake up, take a bottle and go right back to sleep. Then he's up around 5am again, takes a bottle and sleeps until 7 or 8 then is up for the day. I've tried setting a routine, feeding him an extra ounce at night and he doesn't nap much during the day. He just seems to never be tired. What else can I do?

  • When he wakes up at 2am, just try to soothe back to sleep (and dont take him out of the crib) instead of giving a bottle right away. It might just be a habit for him now. After soothing try a smaller bottle, then smaller, then the third night try no bottle... My daughter did the same thing (at two months)... After just soothing, she got the hang of it and has been sleeping through the night ever since. Good luck.... Hopefully yours will sleep like mine. 12-13 hrs per night.

  • My daughtes 2 1/2 months and she's on basically the same schedule as your little one. Mine's not old enough yet, but i'm told a little cereal in their bottle at night time could help.

  • well it actually depends on the baby. my dd just started sleeping thru the night and thats only because she took herself off the bottle. shes 15 months old. i think they just do it in their own time. i put my dd on a schedule and it didnt help until she was off the bottle. a 5 month old should be waking up about 3 or 4 times a night. but some babies are different. even if they are on a schedule

  • Kaylee at that age was basically on the same schedule as your baby. She is now 7 1/2 months, and sleeps through the 2am feeding (sometimes she will wake up and want her pacifier, but she goes right back to sleep) and most of the time sleeps all of the way through until 8 or 9am.

Just wait for it, it will take a little longer. It will help a lot if, when he is 6 months, you start giving him solids at dinner time (if you haven't started yet). I give Kaylee a jar of baby food and a 6oz bottle and she does great.

  • It totally depends on the baby. I know some almost a year old who haven't slept through yet.

On the other hand, I was very lucky...

    1...slept through at 6 weeks
    2...slept through at 8 weeks
    3...slept through at 14 weeks (10 adjusted)

  • I think it's normal to wake to eat. My baby wakes 5-6 times a night and is 5 months... but 2 times I think is normal for that age for many babies

  • I know I was lucky. Mine were all sleeping through very early (7 weeks, 10 weeks, and 12 weeks), but my SIL and a friend each had one that didn't sleep through until after 2 years. I think your best bets are to make sure he is plenty tired and plenty full at bedtime. Good luck!

  • Depends on the baby. My first 4 were around 2 months old. My youngest was 21 months old.
