Paying for College - TWICE

Anyone else have to put themselves through school, only to pay their loans off and have to start saving for their teens?  Seems unfair! Not unfair for my daughter, but unfair that my parents contributed nothing toward my education.  Just venting, but I'm feeling strapped by it all.

My husband paid for his own college.  He has the money and doesn't mine paying for our girls.  IF he didn't have the money, he would probably feel differently.  When we were married we paid for my medical assisting school.  I had a small loan of $4000 and paid the rest off monthly during school.

My parents contributed nothing towards my education.  47K later (and that's not including the grants and scholarships I got) I just finished paying it off and now have to save for my own.  I don't blame my parents or think it was unfair, they didn't have the money either.

I am sorry!  I can see how it must seem never ending.   My parents paid for my College.  I was very fortunate.  Dh and I are paying for our sons' educations, what is not covered by grants a and scholarships.

Yep, I'm with you.

I put myself through college. I got loans, a couple of grants and scholarships.

Our dd is a high school senior now and she isn't planning on going straight to college at this point. We will help her out when she decides what she is going to do. We will have a few years before our sons are college age.

My parents couldn't afford it either, but kind of feel like it was never even a thought to put a little something away. They never took me around to see schools or talked to me about where I wanted to go. I was lost through the whole process. It's going to be totally different for my kids.

Has your daughter signed up for Fastweb.com, and other scholarship websights?

My parents would've blown a gasket if I asked for help with university. I think its not fair on fasfa and other aide they assume so much of a parents income will go to help. We will help dd as much as we can but I wont outright pay for it. I had to work my butt off and so should she.

As of next year I will be helping 3 through college. While they have good grants and a few scholarships. It still hurts the pocket book. By the time I am done paying 80% of theirs that I will owe off I will have 4 more netering college (hopefully). No rest for our pocket books anytime soon lol

I worked my way through University - I had a domestic help job at a local retirement village and I worked Friday, Saturday and Sunday of every week, plus I worked most vacations full-time there (they liked the way I worked and offered me plenty of shifts when I was free) to build up a stash of cash towards the next semester's fees.  It wasn't easy but it meant I wasn't relying on my parents who really couldn't afford for me to go to University no matter how much I wanted it (and I DID want it big-time) since they had 3 other kids to raise.

Our eldest daughter is about to start her University adventures and fortunately she buckled down and won a scholarship to help out with expenses.  She is getting help from the government with her tution fees (Australian government helps out most students with loans for this that only have to be paid back when you're earning a certain amount per year) and the scholarship money should cover books, software and equipment she needs for her Engineering course.
