At what age do you think is acceptable for a teenager to get a tattoo or body piercing?

In our house, the rule is "Not until you are 18 and no longer living under our roof."

A single ear piercing will be fine (dh may disagree w/ me on that one w/ the boys), but anything more than that, no.

My daughter will be getting her belly button done on her 14th birthday (well actually the day after, she's throwing a punk show on her birthday and I advised her to wait til the next day so her belly button wasn't hurting for the show).  We both agreed to wait until she's at least 18 and done growing before getting a tattoo.  Right now she's not that interested but that may change with time.

A single ear piercing is totally fine with me.  My daughter, who turns 16 in two weeks, doesn't want any additional piercing.  She said that the belly button and ear plugs kind of gross her out so I guess I don't have to worry about that.

As far as the tattoo goes I would want her to wait until she is older, like at least out of college.  Tastes can change so easily.  My husband has two that he got in the Army when he was young.  He tells her all the time that he doesn't show his tattoos to people until they know him because some people are really judgemental.

FYI - I am shocked at how many students at my daugher's high school have tattoos.  Several of these kids got their tattoos at 15.

18 no ifs ands or buts - that's when they are legally adults and can make their own decisions, until then we are in charge!

All of this requires parental consent!  I would certainly try to put off getting tattoos.  This is such a permanent decision.  My daughter got her ears pierced in 5th grade, and then double pierced when she turned 16.  She begged for the double piercing for several years before I gave in and took her for her birthday.  When she turned 18 she went crazy and went and got triple ears, upper ear cartilage, nose ring, and then a few months later a tattoo.  I know that the nose ring can be taken out, but the tattoo is forever.  I hate all of it!

Ears whenever they want. The rest is on their own.If during college they get visible tats they are warned the next months allowance will have a deduction. If after they are mature they want tats there is nothing I can do. I do remember what I thought was so fantastic at 18 had changed dramatically by 25 so I hope they would wait till they are a bit settled in life before getting tattoos.
