I let my 14 year old DD and 10 year DS walk to the library just about every day . They have games, book reading and computers for the kids during the summer so it is a great safe place for them to be. But today they came home with condoms and pamphlets a lady from the health dept. gave them :( apparently it is national aids day so the health dept. people went up to every teen and gave them a talk about staying safe, where to go to get free condoms and to get checked for std's without having to tell their parents! Am I the only parent who finds this inappropriate ? I have had THE talk with my kids I don't need some stranger giving them this info! Would you be ok with this?

I would not have an issue with it.    My kids would not have learned anything they didn't already know, as we have been talking about sex since they weere old enough to understand.

I'd be perfectly ok with it. By 14, they've already learned it in school health class, so it's info they know that's being reinforced. I'd rather my son be educated rather than a dad as a teen.

You had the talk, great. But it should be ongoing talks from a young age and shouldn't stop. Also a lot of parents stick their heads in the sand and think ignoring the talk prevents their kids from knowing. Wrong, they just get unreliable info from their friends.

Good! If you've already had the talk, what's the harm? I'd rather be proactive than be disappointed about an unwanted pregnancy or STD.

The 10 year was given all the same info my 14 year old was ;( and came home playing with his condom lol he knows about certain things but I feel he is to immature to be given condoms because he blew it up like a ballon and then when he walked in the door my 7 year old was asking hom "What is that?"

Id be ok with it for the 14yo, but what did they say to the 10yo?

I've had talks with my kids but not in great detail with my youngest, who is 9. She knows moms bleed once a month as their bodies get ready to make a baby, but not stds or the mechanics of how babies are made. I would be pissed if she learned this from some ultra liberal schmoe at the library.

I would be fine with it!  Explain to your kids that some kids' parents don't talk with them and if they need this information they need to get it from somewhere.  Discuss the pamphlet, etc., with them so it isn't a "forbidden" and isn't anything in hiding.  Tell them what you expect and that they are not "old enough" yet to need this, because of your values, etc.  But, good information for later.  If you make a big deal out of it, they will be affected.  If you just say it is "education", then they will be fine.

Yes, I'd be absolutely fine with it also.

ummm NO sure wouldn't be okay with this at all...but there are teens in the world that don't feel comfortable telling their parents about it or anything.

I would be majorly poed. They have no right to give your kid that info..  That is your place not the health dept. Even In the schools my kids go to , you have to sign an OK for that part of the health class. Different families have different views on this and the health dept had no right without the parents permission. I would be outraged even though my kids "know" everything. I still do not expect some stanger telling my 10 year old where he can get free condoms.

And I understand some parents don't but I really feel like they overstepped. I spoke with the manager of the teen program and she said she has had several complaints. Apparently the library did not ok the health dept. doing this.

I think it is great. It is good that you have had the talk with your kids but many parents do not

Yup I think it is great because there are many parents who won't educate their children.  They need to learn this somewhere.
