Apple or non-Apple laptop?
See what the school recommends and then ask the student. My DS should have had a Mac according to his major and the school but he refused stating they are overpriced and he didn't feel a need for it. As the years go on he may change his mind.
I can't stand macs but they do have a place in some majors. If they are going into the arts, mac is probably the best bet, anything else should be windows based.
Most college programs are Windows based, and will run better on a non-Apple product. And my older dd is an artist, and a HS art teacher, and she HATES Apple products.
Ask the college what they recommend for such things. Dd got a HP laptop but an I pad to take to classes. The smart boards download to the I Pad, but the laptop has more graphics and memory that she needed too.
I swear by non apple but if you ask my kids they tell you the appl pro mac is the best!

Depends on school and major. Dd got an apple.yup , mine didn't pick an apple but niece did.Different school and majors.
I don't understand why a school would have a inpack on this, the apple does a whole lot more then what my computer does.
