Please Help!! I think my son has an eating disorder!

I'm not sure how to approach this, and I know it is rare for boys to have eating disorders, but I'm at my wit's end with knowing how to help him.  He thinks about food all the time and exercises about three hours a day.  He has lost a lot of weight and is at a healthy weight right now, but he is getting overly worried because he's gained a few pounds over the summer.

I've got to wonder if his dad's illness is a factor in bringing this out.  Any advice is appreciated!

Get him help.  The 13yo son of one of my friends has an eating disorder and his family is in complete denial.    The kid had to be HOSPITALIZED for 2 weeks for it and his family still denies that there is any problem saying he is "just athletic" ect.

There could be a lot of underlying causes and it would not be helpful for me to speculate why.  Take him to a specialist and let him talk about it.   Kids are hormonal and emotional... an eating disorder could be caused by a big thing or something small.  If his dad is ill, that could be a factor since the ability to control something when life is out of control is a common factor.

Best wishes to you and your family

If you feel something is wrong then take him to a nutritionist. That is a start they then may refer him to a counseling facility. There are all kinds of stressors and pressures put on kids. They have to look like this, be a part of the in crowd and other things. We, as parents, have to reassure and be there. I know that you will do what is best for your child hugs momma

Call his family Dr and get him in ASAP. They can set up an appointment with professionals  the deal with eating disorders. It is a mental health issue and he needs help and counselling. It is a long haul and not an easy one. Been there done that still living it with DD in recovering an not having triggered for 13 months.

If you need anyone to vent to just drop me a line. I feel your pain and its a long hard road to recovery.

Oh, no...I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's son.  I hope he gets the help he needs as well.

I am thinking it has a lot to do with his dad.  He's a heart patient and has been very sick the past two years, and is going through some tough stuff right now with a horrible, chronic cough...it's very stressful to hear him.  I can also see where it is two-fold:  the exercising and losing weight so that the same thing doesn't happen to him, as happened to his dad, plus using it all as a way to control something.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you, we do have an appointment with a nutritionist for my husband, so we can do that for my son, too.  You're so right, kids have so many more serious pressures that we did.  I love him so much and don't want to see him going through this.

I'm glad your friend is doing well...wow, a heart attack so young!  I can see where the condition would put tremendous stress on the heart.  Thanks for sharing.  Hugs to you, too.
