Painting your teen's room - let them have at it?

Would you let your teen design/paint their own room? We own, so we have the option to do whatever in terms of decorating (we had rented for years with strict rules about paint). So my two teen dd's (15 & 16) want to paint their own rooms.

I will buy the paint - with a limit of course, I'm not getting six gallons of different colours, but a few cans with a few colours is ok.

Within rules/guidelines of nothing rude/vulgar, I am thinking of painting one wall white so my one dd can draw/graffitti on it however she'd like. They have dry erase paint, so I'm considering using that. The other one wants to do a layered "sunset" with three or four different bands of colour going up the wall.

I was allowed as a teen to decorate however I wanted, I bought all the paint myself and had probably 50 different colours on the walls at one point, just crazy. My parents were ok with it, there was never anything "bad" painted, just throwing colours at the walls - kind of like those "obscure art" paintings, lol.

Would you let your teen design their own room to a point? Not necessarily replacing all the furniture on your coin or anything, but colour/paint-wise?

When we got our house we had all of our kids pick out their color. My daughter helped me paint her room and her bathroom but my son was not interested, he just picked out his color and my other son was much younger so I just let him pick ou the color and he wanted the theme to be spider-man.

I think with certain guidlines depending on how you choose to raise your kids I think if you are able to decorate however you want it's great to allow the kids to express themselves with their room.

My middle daughter wanted her room painted when she turned 13 (it was hot pink, a color she chose when she was 9), so we went to the paint store and she chose the color (pale green) and then we painted together.  She wanted to do polka dots in a contrasting color, but I encouraged her to add bold color with her accessories and see how she liked it first.  She went for black, white and purple bed linens, curtains, pillows, lamp, etc..  She's happy with how it turned out--no need for polka dots.  I just wanted it to be something she could live with until she graduates from high school.  So if you're okay with having to repaint everything yourself at some point (including covering up what they do with a couple coats of primer before re-painting), then let them have at it...but ifi you'd like it to last awhile, you might want to try showing them some pics from magazines and catalogs of something a bit more 'understated' but still modern and young.  Good luck!

Sure! if they are into it and you have the means, why not?

It's never come up, mine seem to be more of the cover the walls in photos type, but it wouldn't bother me.

My dd, now 20, did hers the other summer and it turned out great.  She did it purple with brown wainscoating.  It came out great.

We own our home but the kids aren't allowed to paint their rooms anything darker than eggshell.  My DH does not like to paint over dark colors.

This.  We hate painting as it is.

The flash washed out the color a bit.  But here is her room.  She did get some new furniture as well.  <a href="http://s26.photobucket.com/user/my2kidsmom9498/media/037_zps883c406b.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c106/my2kidsmom9498/037_zps883c406b.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo 037_zps883c406b.jpg"/></a>
