Hi, I'm Harley -- Mom to a cat so far, but due any time within the next 4-6 weeks with twins. I'm planning an unassisted homebirth (and yes, I'm fine with my choice), I just feel that it's the best choice for me and my budding family right now.
Here's my stats:
Married - Pagan - Business Owner - 25
I have had a few miscarriages (two falls, two due to stress) but I'm not letting it phase me. I just have to keep going as best as I can.
I try to advocate and talk about my choices with confidence and pride, even though a lot of the people around me are very judgmental and it makes me uncomfortable.
"Well, if you're comfortable with doing it unassisted.." from a woman who's homebirthed twice already and homeschools her kids! You'd think she'd be more open.
And sometimes I have to make it seem like I'm doing the whole hospital route because there are so many people around me that think I just don't know what I'm doing or I'm putting myself at risk... "Hospital births are safer!! Homebirths kill babies!" they say... and the occasional few, just to let it sink in that I will NOT be doing what they think is best: "What do you think of unassisted births?"
"Unassisted? You mean with no doctor or anything? That doesn't seem safe at all!"
Yeah. Welcome to my town. We have one birthing center with a midwife who is only on one form of insurance type (plus govt. insurance) and she prefers epi's and inducing over letting things happen naturally. I'm a little sick of the biased attitude and with me due soon, I'm just wanting some support and to surround myself with people who don't need reassurance that I'm doing what -I- think is best. This is MY family and MY body and MY life, and they (nor the government) have any right to intervene!!
*sigh*
I tried finding 'homebirth doulas' in my area and NOTHING came up. NADA. Any suggestions, anyone?
Much love,
--Harley
