first- i want to sew my little sister a skating skirt for christmas, i tried to find a free online pattern and so far no luck. if anyone has one to share i will be soooo grateful!!!

second- i'm trying to make christmas gifts this year, my sister will get the skirt. but for my parents i haven't quite figured out what to do. i'm new to sewing still so an easy sewing item is possible, and i'm learning how to knit (have knit 2 items so far, and sewn 2 diapers...that's how new i am to these hobbies) so something that is a quick knit is also an option. to give you an idea of "who" they are so what gifts might fit- my dad works in a paper mill, comes home to drink beer, watch tv, do crossword puzzles and cook supper (he loves to cook) my mom is a teacher for the kids who get kicked out of the normal classrooms and she loves slot machines lol. i was thinking maybe a pair of socks or potholders for my dad? but for my mom i'm clueless! help me please!

Try looking for a dance skirt pattern. They don't have the briefs underneath, but otherwise I believe they're about the same.

Sounds like your papa might like an apron, maybe. Plenty of free patterns for those, though most of them are for women. Try searching specifically for chef's apron and you'll probably find plenty.

As for your mom...I haven't a clue either. Good luck!

For an apron you can use almost anything but if you use lighter cotton make sure to use two layers so cooking splashes don't soak through (You can always sew it right sides together, leave an opening on the bottom, turn, and topstitch (I just did this for DH's grandma).  Since you are newer to sewing you might want to consider buying a thick ribbon to use for neck and waist ties, I sewed and turned ties for the apron I made and it took me longer to turn the darn things than almost anything else!

For mom?!? Does she play real slots? or online games?  If real slots what about a bag for her coins/tokens? (I don't play so I don't know if that's a good idea or not!)  Otherwise you could always a buy a composition notebook and collage magazine words and pics of your kids on the cover and cover with contact paper (the clear kind).  It would make a nice extra planning notebook or something cute to take to parent/teacher conferences.... :)  Good luck, I am crafting gifts this year too!

I was thinking a roll or two of quarters for your mom too.  You could take them out of the wrappers and put them in something funny.
