I would like to know how many diapers you can cut out of a yard of fabric(newborn) I am looking at making an AIO or AI2 with one type of fabric on top and one inside with removable soakers. I will most likely be trying with snaps and with Velcro.
I plan to crochet or knit some of the soaker my only question here is should I make the snap ins or no I can not see unsnapping them after a.... well you get it I hope.
I am hoping that my DIL will use these and not the store bought ones, they are such a waste of money and landfill.
How many should I make for her to use being that this is her first baby and I dont' remember how many I use 20+ yrs ago with my kids.
I plan on making some that will grow with the baby too if you know of a good pattern to use I would like to know what you all use I have got about 5 patterns to try and that.
Thank you for all the help, From a Grandmother that cares about her grandkids and love to do crafts.
Most people have said they can get six from a yard with newborns but I dont know if that is six cuts or six diapers. AIO take forever to dry AI2 might be less of a hassle for someone that is not passionate about cloth. As long as they arent a pain to stuff and they dry quickly. I would do a lay in soaker without snaps if she is not sure about cloth. That way she wont have to handle poo as much and they arent a pain to wash. She can also add as much obsorbancy as she wants if you make lay in liners.
Amount depends on your pattern and fabric. I may have this backward (I'm forgetful) but I think flannel is 45" and fleece is 60" wide. Flannel will shrink, not sure how much...fleece won't.
You don't have to unsnap inserts. Just toss the whole diaper in the wash.
Young babies should have about 12 diapers per day; they should be washed no less than once every 3 days. It's good to have a few extra just in case.
(All of these patterns can be found in the Diaper Directory) I like the OnederSnap OS (it has very long tabs, so the rise will probably be outgrown long before the waist is) and SproutSnap OS. I think the ClothBaby pattern is cute, but the snap settings are confusing so you'll probably want to use the settings from another pattern. Rita's Rump Pocket is awesome too; it's a pinnable diaper, but you can modify it to use snaps/velcro. Of all of them, I'd say the OnederSnap fits my 3yo best...but that's probably just because the wings still cross over on him and I just pin it instead of adding snaps =)

Definitely not whole diapers. They aren't that much smaller than LG or OS and I can only get...well, I forget...but definitely no more than 6 cuts of the RRP from a yard of fleece. I think I get 4 [RRP] cuts from a yard of flannel if I arrange it carefully. Gosh I wish I could remember these numbers for sure...maybe I ought to start writing them down! But...I'm pretty sure I was correct in my previous reply; flannel is 45" wide (prior to shrinking) and fleece is 60" wide.
I agree on the AIO/AI2 bit. I adore cloth and even I don't want to deal with drying AIOs; snap-in or external sewn-on (along one end, not the entire perimeter) inserts are easiest for me. I hate stuffing pockets, but they do have an upside - the inserts don't tend to shift around as easily.
This is my test Rita's Rump Pocket it is flannel on both sides for it is what I have(yes it was pre washed more than once). I still have to get elastic for the legs andturn it back to put it in. I am not to big on the style.I am looking at eh Chloe toes sdie snapping diaper cover, and using it to make the diapers for it is the only pattern so far that I have for premies to x large. I have other patterns about the same style and that is the style I like
Looks good so far! The OnederSnap is similar enough that if you don't like RRP you may not like it either. I'll post a pic or two later so you can see and decide for yourself.
For sized diapers, Cloth Revolution is great. It's also side-snapping.
