So I got a little spooked (lol) by the fact that a friend who saw one of the diapers I made asked to have me make and buy some...Well first I was excited because I hadnt even thought of making them to sell, then i was excited cause it was a way to make a little extra cash doing somethiing i like doing..and then I freaked out a little

How much to i charge? how do i decide what colors to say that are available for buying? will they be good enough for selling to somebody? (my only experience making them is from the ones i first made so not sure if theyll be good enough)Oh and then the major part was that she wanted them by august when her nephew is due but im moving from WA to ID in 2 weeks and will be there for 4 weeks then I move from ID to NY. Then I have to get a whole household set up and going, all while taking care of my daughter who is 12 weeks right now. I sooo want to do this but i really cant get it done right now. I wouldnt even be able to order the materials before getting on my way..Its so frustrating.

Anybody else make diapers and have had people buy them from you?  Any advice, tips, or experiences you could share?

  •  I don't really sell mine so I would not be any help, but here is a bump.

  • I had the exact same reaction the first time someone asked to buy one of mine!  I totally freaked and declined.  I've made some since and it's been just fine though :)  Just be sure you have the size and patterns done correctly, be sure she understands that you are new to this and that if for some reason it doesn't fit you would fix it/make her another one.

As for price I tend to just charge bare minimum cost for close friends, which is around $4 for a pocket diaper.  But in order to profit the general rule is that you take the cost to make it and multiply that 3 times.  So a pocket diaper would be about $12.  That covers the materials, your labor, and a little profit to buy more material for future diapers.

  • I make dipes for sale... The very BIGGEST tip I can give? Don't bite off more than you can chew... I once said "yes" to a woman about getting her order to herr ontime... BEFORE I knew what her order was going to be... She wanted a FULL stash.. and I mean FULL- enough dipes so she only had to wash every three days- from birth thru toddlerdom!! She wanted 28 new born, 20 small, 20 medium, 15 large, and 10 extra large.... And she wanted ALL of that in about 4 weeks time... I did it... But I was at the sewing machine from 6am until noon and then from 4 until midnight EVERY DAY for 3 weeks and 3 days.... It ALMOSt turned me off of making dipes for others forever... If you feel you are going to ahve too much on your plate- SAY SO... It does you no good to run yourself into the ground and then not be able to enjoy your family... I missed Peanut sitting up on his own for the first time! :(

  • Thank you ladies so much for the advice..I really appreciate it. I think right now I am going to let her choose from the diapers that I am already working on for my daughter i have some green and yellow that she could choose from..I let her know that and that i was still working on them and she said that as long as she could have first pick before anyone else shed be happy and that she will go with what I have and then ask her sister in law how many more she wants after that so I think that will buy me a little time to get across country and get my sewing area set up and materials ordered.
