I am trying to make my first diaper. It will be a fitted I think because I don't have anything water proof....

So I dug out some cute receiving blankets, and got a pattern, and now I am lost, lol

I get the general Idea of how to make this; I am going to watch a couple youtube videos again before I get started, but I need to know about cloth.

What fabrics can go where, and all that.

Okay,

1. Which fabrics, can touch baby's skin? All I know is fleece, and silk noir (sp?) for sensitive skin.

2. What all can be the middle layer? The ones that do the soaking up ( I don't know what they're called)  I know terry cloth, and micro fiber can be used, but I don't have any of that right now, so what else can I use? Also I hear  either bamboo or hemp is the most absorbent, which is it? and do they have a more spongy/thicker material?

3. What are my options for the outer waterproof layer (I know I don't need that now as I'm making a fitted, but My goal is to make AIOs or pocket AIOs) All I know  of is PUL, and I'm trying to figure out the best cheapest way to purchase it.

I don't know anything about fabric, so if you have any tips for me that's be great! Especially what certain fabrics are called, and what they are like, and what they're good for! I'm new to sewing entirely. I think I made a cotton purse (horrible job, btw) many years back, lol.

TIA for any help I can get!

I haven't made the diaper yet.. I did make a doll size diaper thing.. for practice.

Anyway, I made a pattern that I think I will like better, and now i think I am set!

I have another couple a bunch of questions first though...

1. Is polyester fleece ok to use against the skin? I thought all this stuff laying around my house was cotton, but that's not the case..

I'm kinda hesitant to start the diaper. I don't wanna mess it up, and I know very little about this stuff, lol.

I am excited though, I have a very cute piece cut out for the outer layer. Pink pin stripe type stuff. VERY cute :)

Also I got some micro fiber stuff for the inner layer, it says it's "sheep skin like", and super soft. I don't think it's like sheep skin really, I think it feels more like rabbit, lol, but is this okay to use for the inner soaker?

It's hairy lookin' haha.

Should I do two layers of the polyester fleece (I think its what it is..) type stuff to make sure it wicks moisture far enough away from the skin?

So here's what I'm thinking, (any pointers or two cents here will be gladly accepted)

Fitted:

-Outer layer thin cotton (don't know what it's called other than that)

-Polyester fleece (IF that is what it is called, hehe)

-Microfiber either towel OR "Sheep skin like"

-Another layer or two of the fleece next to baby's skin.

Is that too many layers? Not enough? Do I have the right idea?Any advice for me??? LOL

Thanks so much!

  • Fleece is good against the skin and also if you are using an old tshirts or anything like that as fabric that can go against the skin.  Flannel is ok too but I am told it keeps baby feeling wet.

For the middle/soaker layer I use Microfiber auto towels, but you could also just use layers of flannel or old tshirts.  Just cut your shape and sew a bunch of them together in a stack (zigzag or serging the edges)

For my outside layers I use fleece. It works pretty well.  Its not completely waterproof, but it works and I buy if for $4.44/yd.  The only time I have a problem with it is if baby is sitting in one spot for awhile then the wetness will eventually push through.

hope this helps.  They are quick responses but I have to head off to change a diaper now. Good Luck!

  • I did some shopping around and the best price I found for PUL was verybaby.com. For the inside 'soaker' matieral you could use an old towel you dont use anymore. Good luck!

  • I think you and Delilah should venture up to our house. =)    We can have a sewing day and I can show all the different materials I have, 1st hand.  (Like the coercion?  lol)

I get most of my fabrics from Denver Fabrics (it's right off Belleview between Federal and Santa Fe).  Their PUL is a little pricier than ordering online but you get instant gratification and save on shipping. =)

  • I make AIOs and the PUL I use I find on sale from companies going out of business or moms trying to destash. I use a cotton flannel for the part touching baby's skin, and microfiber for the soaker layer, but you can use old towels also. The flannel I like because it is soft, not too hot, and while it doesn't wick the moisture away from baby's bottom as well, it's super absorbent so it goes into the microfiber very quickly... besides the fact that for newborns and infants we believe in changing diapers every time they pee (or close to it) instead of letting them sit (which is possible in some cloth and most disposable diapers since there is no moisture against their bodies). Hope that helps a bit!

  • I really like using micorfiber for the inside layer. It's light weight, absorbant and dries fast. Some people say it causes stinkies, but I haven't had that issue yet.
