I am trying to make my first diaper. It will be a fitted I think because I don't have anything water proof....

So I dug out some cute receiving blankets, and got a pattern, and now I am lost, lol

I get the general Idea of how to make this; I am going to watch a couple youtube videos again before I get started, but I need to know about cloth.

What fabrics can go where, and all that.

Okay,

1. Which fabrics, can touch baby's skin? All I know is fleece, and silk noir (sp?) for sensitive skin.

2. What all can be the middle layer? The ones that do the soaking up ( I don't know what they're called)  I know terry cloth, and micro fiber can be used, but I don't have any of that right now, so what else can I use? Also I hear  either bamboo or hemp is the most absorbent, which is it? and do they have a more spongy/thicker material?

3. What are my options for the outer waterproof layer (I know I don't need that now as I'm making a fitted, but My goal is to make AIOs or pocket AIOs) All I know  of is PUL, and I'm trying to figure out the best cheapest way to purchase it.

I don't know anything about fabric, so if you have any tips for me that's be great! Especially what certain fabrics are called, and what they are like, and what they're good for! I'm new to sewing entirely. I think I made a cotton purse (horrible job, btw) many years back, lol.

TIA for any help I can get!

I haven't made the diaper yet.. I did make a doll size diaper thing.. for practice.

Anyway, I made a pattern that I think I will like better, and now i think I am set!

I have another couple a bunch of questions first though...

1. Is polyester fleece ok to use against the skin? I thought all this stuff laying around my house was cotton, but that's not the case..

I'm kinda hesitant to start the diaper. I don't wanna mess it up, and I know very little about this stuff, lol.

I am excited though, I have a very cute piece cut out for the outer layer. Pink pin stripe type stuff. VERY cute :)

Also I got some micro fiber stuff for the inner layer, it says it's "sheep skin like", and super soft. I don't think it's like sheep skin really, I think it feels more like rabbit, lol, but is this okay to use for the inner soaker?

It's hairy lookin' haha.

Should I do two layers of the polyester fleece (I think its what it is..) type stuff to make sure it wicks moisture far enough away from the skin?

So here's what I'm thinking, (any pointers or two cents here will be gladly accepted)

Fitted:

-Outer layer thin cotton (don't know what it's called other than that)

-Polyester fleece (IF that is what it is called, hehe)

-Microfiber either towel OR "Sheep skin like"

-Another layer or two of the fleece next to baby's skin.

Is that too many layers? Not enough? Do I have the right idea?Any advice for me??? LOL

Thanks so much!

    1. Which fabrics, can touch baby's skin? All I know is fleece, and silk noir (sp?) for sensitive skin.

any fabric can go against babys skin except pul or thick poly fleece, or microfiber.  some of my favorite inners are flannel, baby terry, cotton velour, seudecloth, and microfleece.  you can actually make the entire fitted diaper, inside, outside, and soaker, from recycled t-shirts if that is what you have.

    2. What all can be the middle layer? The ones that do the soaking up ( I don't know what they're called)  I know terry cloth, and micro fiber can be used, but I don't have any of that right now, so what else can I use? any absorbant can be the soaker, so nothing poly.  if you use too many layers, it can take a long time to dry.  another option is a lay in or snap in or even sewn in trifold soaker, which can have fewer but larger layers, and is folded for a total of more layers while still being quick drying.

    3. What are my options for the outer waterproof layer (I know I don't need that now as I'm making a fitted, but My goal is to make AIOs or pocket AIOs) All I know  of is PUL, and I'm trying to figure out the best cheapest way to purchase it.

options for outer layers or covers-- PUL, of course, thick poly fleece (water resistant, not proof) or wool.  for cheap cheap wool, go to your local thrift shop and buy 100% wool sweaters to recycle.  Wool should not be sewn to the diaper itself, because you will need to wash seperately, but can be used for covers or snapped in for a wool in 2.

    1. Is polyester fleece ok to use against the skin? I thought all this stuff laying around my house was cotton, but that's not the case..

poly MICROfleece is fine for inners... but regualr thick fleece will repel.

I'm kinda hesitant to start the diaper. I don't wanna mess it up, and I know very little about this stuff, lol.

Never use microfiber for against the skin... use this only for soakers.  and what you have doesn't sound like what I would use for inners either.  I would suggest using cotton for the soakers, or some other natural fiber.  if you want microfiber, walmart has microfiber towels that are good for this, but I never liked the stuff myself, and never ever sold a diaper with microfiber in it.

    It's hairy lookin' haha.

Should I do two layers of the polyester fleece (I think its what it is..) type stuff to make sure it wicks moisture far enough away from the skin?

nope.  with poly fleece, the thinner the layer the better the chance it will wick away.  if you put 2 layers, it is even more likely to repel.  and be really really bulky.

I would suggest trying it this way:

outer cotton, hidden cotton (you can use recycled t-shirts, more of your same outer cotton, or even old towels cut up), inner either microfleece (really thin fleece) or seudewcloth if you need it to wick, or just cotton is fine too.

You will need a soaker, and one inner layer will not do it.  my suggestion for cheap is either an old towel topped a peice of seudecloth or else cut up t-shirts.  you will need several layers to get greast absorbancy.  easiest way would be trifold either laid in or sewn to the top of the inner.  if you do trifold, only the part that will touch abby needs the seudeclothe... don't waste your layers.

Is that too many layers? Not enough? Do I have the right idea?Any advice for me??? LOL

    Thanks so much!
