I need some advice!
This is my first baby and we are expecting in July. I have two dogs that I'm starting to worry about. We have a 3 year old chocolate lab and a 2 year old whippet (mini greyhound). Both dogs are extremely hyper. My whippet (Bruno) is very hyper. He will run circles around the backyard. He has taught our lab how to jump and now they jump all the time. Bruno will run and jump off of me when he first sees me. We hit him and punish him but he is so quick that he runs away as fast as he can. He doesn't listen well. The lab jumps, but won't touch you. When I bring him in he jumps all over until we tell him "bed" and hit him a couple times to settle down. He has a hard time settling down when he first comes in, but when he's settled he's great! Bruno is used to jumping up on the couches and cuddling with me. He's very jealous and always needs my attention. I feel like my whippet doesn't respond to getting punished much and the lab doesn't even feel it with I try to hit him. My husband helps greatly, but is only here everyother night b/c he's a fireman.
I'm afraid that Bruno will jump on me and use my stomach to push off. I'm also afraid of when we have the baby, he will get jealous and try to jump up to sit with me. I've thought about maybe a Petco class or something, but not sure.
Please, any advice will be welcomed! Thanks!
I had this problem with my boxer and American bulldog (both large dogs). I used the command "don't jump." while pointing my finger down in front of me. They learned quite quickly. My AB never jumps on ppl anymore. Have you seen any of ceasar milan videos? If you go on his site you can view some cases that are similar to yours or search it on youtube. However, if this fails-I would def. recommend a trainer be hired. Good Luck!!
Yes I love Cesar! He is going to be my next husband!! But yes a dog trainer is what is needed. It sounds like Bruno thinks he rules the house and needs to be put in his place. It will be and uphill battle but one worth getting done way before baby comes home!! Good luck momma nd let us know how it goes.

Hitting them won't help. They will either A) think you are playing or B) be threatened by you and start to shy away from you and be scared which won't help either. I agree that a training class would help. I've had boxers my entire life and I have never let them jump from day one.... once it starts, it's extremely hard to stop. I wish you the best of luck in this endeavor.
