A Glossary of Terms

View:  A view is recorded any time someone, a group member or a non-member, views a page within your group.  This could be your group homepage, the page listing all of your forums, even the page where you create a new post.

Views (CafeMom Members Only):  These are views on your group pages made by registered members of CafeMom.

Post:  A post is recorded each time an original post is created by clicking the Add a Post button and hitting Submit after entering the post title and message body.  Please note that even deleted posts will count toward the total figure.

Reply:  A reply is recorded when a response to an original post is created by clicking the Reply to Post button and hitting Submit after entering a response.  Please note that even deleted replies will count toward the total figure.

Poster/Replier:  A poster/replier is recorded when a group member either creates an original post or responds to an orginial post with a reply.  A poster/replier is only counted after her first post or reply within your group.  If she makes several posts, several replies or posts and replies, she still only counts as 1 poster/replier within a certain time period.  This figure helps to monitor the number of group members contributing to the conversation in your group during certain timeframes.

Active Member:  An active member is a CafeMom member who has joined your group AND visited your group within a specific time period.  If you are looking at active members over the past 7 days, and your group member, CafeMomxyz, visited 1 day ago and 3 days ago, she only counts as 1 active member.

Average Posts/Replies per Active Members:  This figure takes the total posts/replies within a time period and divides it by the total active members within that same time period.  The result is an average number of posts and/or replies made by group members visiting your group.

Total Friendships amongst Active Members:  This figure looks at the total active members within a specific time period and then counts how many friend connections exist amongst them on CafeMom.  It does not double count friend connections, meaning if you and CafeMom Team belong to the same group and are friends, that only counts as 1 friend connection.

New Members:  A new member is recorded when a CafeMom member joins your group or her application is accepted. Please note if a member joins your group, leaves your group and then re-joins in the same time period, she will count as 2 new members during that time period.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the Scorecard information get updated?

The Group Status and Activity Snapshot information is updated daily by noon EST.
The Group Activity History (the page with charts) is updated weekly on Sundays by noon EST.

What does that little green/red arrow mean beside my group’s rank in the Group Status section?

The arrows in Group Status tell you whether your group has moved up (green arrow) or down (red arrow) in rank over the previous day on each of the Active Groups lists.

Wait, I don’t see any rank numbers listed under the Group Status section?

If you only see a dash or dashes under the Group Status section, it means your group is not ranked in the top 250 groups on an Active Groups list at this time.

So, I see my rank number out of the top 250 groups but how do I stack up compared to all groups on CafeMom?

Well, moms have created well over 60,000 groups on CafeMom so if you are in the top 250, you are doing really well and should keep up the great work.  And if you are not ranking just yet, don't fret.  Check out these Do's and Don'ts to help you climb the lists.

When did CafeMom starting tracking the number of ranked days on the Active Group lists?

We started tracking the number of days your group has appeared on the Most Popular, Most Conversations and Most Friendships list on 9/13/09.  We started tracking the Top Member Groups list on 11/22/10.

I’m looking at my total posts/replies for the past 7 days in Activity Snapshot but it’s not the same number as what is listed on the Post/Replies chart on my Group Activity History.  What’s the difference?

The past 7 days in the Activity Snapshot section reflects data from yesterday plus the prior 6 days.

The Post/Replies chart reflects weekly data looking at calendar weeks, Sunday through Saturday.  Weeks are marked by the “beginning date”.  For example, Week beginning 9/20 shows weekly data for Sunday, September 20, 2009 through Saturday, September 26, 2009.

Wow, we have so many views compared to the number of posts and replies.  Does that mean we have a bunch of lurkers in our group?

Not at all.  Every time a group member clicks on any page in your group - the homepage, the forum page, post page, the chat room - that counts as a view.  Think about how many pages you click on in your group just to catch up on what's happening!  Those views start to add up.

A better way to look at participation is to look at the Average Posts/Replies per Active Member.  If you get a ratio of 10 or more, meaning an average of 10+ posts/replies per active member, your group is doing pretty well.  If you get an average of 25 posts/replies per active member, your group is really engaged.

Wait, why are total page views higher than group member page views?

Total page views include views from visitors who are not members of your group yet.  These could be people stopping by on your homepage to check out the group description to see if the group is something they are interested in.  Sometimes, they choose not to join and so their views are not counted in the group member page views.  Don't worry, this doesn't mean you have a bunch of lurkers hanging around.  If you've set up your forums to be private, these visitors can't see your conversations.  Just concentrate on making your homepage welcoming and descriptive so that non-members have all the more reason to join!

This probably isn't a FAQ, but I'm curious--does CafeMom have a record of the date I started my group?  I thought I started my group on a certain date, but the chart has me confused.  (Or, I could be losing my mind!  LOL)

I'm just curious and thinking ahead to "anniversary" dates!

Thank you!

If you are the person who started your group then your joined date will be the day the group was created. If they haven't gotten back to your with an answer yet, you should be able to get one by a contact report, since they are more likely to see that.

If you click on the active groups link in the groups tab, it will tell what each of the lists are. For rising star it says

"Based on increase in views over past 7 days"

This is completely inaccurate. "Zero" posts/replies? Zero Posters/Repliers ???? We've had more than 20 posts each day, each with a min of 10 replies! How are you updating this? One of my admins (above )asked the question as to how we had "Zero" views but had new post and replies, there is a flaw in your system.

it's an ongoing problem is right!  I gave up counting on it to be anywhere near accurate.   It doesn't matter how hard I try to keep a group up in the ratings.  I've seen it say I had 1 new member for an entire day when in fact I've approved 10.  Also the number of post/replies is NEVER accurate. This is a worthless feature if it's never accurate
