My husband and I were heading out on our first 4-hour car ride with the 4-year-old triplets. Yes - we had avoided LONG car trips for a LONG time. But the lake cabin we rented required this dreaded amount of time with small children in a van. We plotted our route and our child-management strategy with care.
I am happy to report that the Harry Potter book-on-CD saved the day. The kids were fascinated. The narrator did a wonderfully engaging job of voices and storytelling that kept everyone hooked. We also had fun conversations at our rest stops about what we were "reading" together. Now we all enjoy the series of books together, too.
