Arizona'as Immigration Law

What does everyone think of Arizona's new immigration law?  Police can stop all Hispanic people and make them prove that they are citizens or are legal immigrants. At least that's what I understand about it so far.  I think they must be having a lot of problems with illegal immigrants because I've seen polls that said that the citizens of Arizona are overwhelmingly in favor of this law.  I just hope that this law is written so as to prevent police abuse of the law.  Does anyone live in Arizona and can you tell us more about this law?  What does everyone else think of this?

I think you've gotten the gist of the new law correct, where anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant can be stopped and asked to provide ID, and I think this new law is vile and disgusting. Illegal immigration in your country must be dealt with no question, but this is a terrible way to do it. Can you imagine what it would feel like to be an American born hispanic stopped by police and grilled and asked to prove it? What does an illegal immigrant look like exactly? This is going to lead to unfair harrassment of citizens, and has a potentially huge economic impact on that state. This is not the solution.

I also think this is a bad law.  Are we going to start putting people in concentration camps because they look different?  What exactly does an American look like?  My grandfather came to this country as a stow away.  Wouldn't that make him an illegal alien?  They came to this country to be free not to be persecuted.  Cops are not the people to give the power to decide who looks like an American and who doesn't.  Cops abuse that kind power.  Bad law, very bad law.

It brings to mind those old movies where the gestapo stops people on the street and asks to see their papers. One commentator on tv said it was not targeting racial groups but you know they are not going to be stopping any blue-eyed blondes and asking for proof of citizenship. I know this is an issue to be dealt with, but this is not the way to do it. I am really glad I do not live in Arizona!

I think our federal government should get off their duffs and do something about our illegal immigration problem so more states don't  do this kind of thing. We've got illegal immigrants here in Ky and we're not even close to any borders--so I guess they're everywhere.
